I see both sides of the argument, one is going to have to back down...

Fraid there is no backing down on our side, its a rule, we enforce it, people obey it. Like I said, I have no issue with adding NOSPAM, or DIESPAM or SPAM to email addies. That will remove any threat of harvesters, whilst still being easy enough to contact.

However, for the detractors over privacy:
Once you connect to the internet your privacy is gone anyway. Anyone can tell your IP, your OS, your service pack, browser, and a whole heap of information - alot more than people know - from you just by arriving at any place on the internet. Any site you go to can log all this information, as well as geographical location.

Email address is nothing compared to knowing all that and more.
I find it rather amusing that mr kai ping fu is arguing over his privacy, when above all the information anyone can log about him, he is concerned about his non linking email address. Yes - Mr Fu has a @hotmail.com address - which contain....no personal information linking to individuals at all. I have one, it has nothing there that can identify me (apart from the fact that its my name as my email address!) - but nothing is stored there, nothing is 'private' there - because hotmail list your email address in their yellow/white pages!!!!!!!!

If he were like me, then maybe, just maybe - he could be worried, because my email address is AOL - which links me to:

My REAL address
My phone number
My age
My bank account details
My gender
My job
and even my favourite places/saved emails and more!

So exaclty how is his privacy going to be intruded upon? The chances are his account is on the yellow/white pages anyway - it automatically is!

They sell that you know.........

chips has a valid point your personal info is sold, re-sold and then sold to the highest bidder what the buyers do with it is there direction, they can send you a nice spam letter or hack your system and drop of a little virus the point is if you want true privecy lock yourself in your room board up the window(s) cut the i-net connection to you computer and live in the dark, because once you click dial (or what ever you do to get on the net) privacy is gone regaurdless of typing you email address in a regestration field (think about it the mods could ask for a lot more) i for one like to hang out here on tlr and intend to obey the rules enough out of my mouth

That's precisely why only a fool provides *real* information when signing up for a free email account .

Post Sun Nov 14, 2004 4:48 pm

good point, the mods only want a valid email address they don't want to know any personal info my user name is completely made up and you most likely won't find it connect to me except through my email and its linked to my isp but thats meaningless

I don't think we can say anymore than we have that putting a DIESPAM or NOSPAM or any such obvious addition in the line is fine with us.

However, for the nth time..................putting a easily understandable tag like that is more than fine.

In the upgrade, the forums will change, and the email won't be viewable.........but we are waiting for that.

Well, for those who dont want to be contacted, just get an email account, from hotmail or somthing, that you check rarely or ever. I think you should supply a valid email address. on my Clanforums, if you are Banned, your sent a mail about it, and if your username is changed, your also sent a mail about it. everyone with a Fake Email Address if Flagged and moved into a Restricted User Group.

Anyway, what if you were mailed offering you a TLR Moderator Position, how would you feel then if you gave a fake Email Addy .

My email is jenuine but it doesnt work

Post Tue Nov 16, 2004 1:06 pm

Well, I am not sure if you are all aware,

BUT

We are hoping to have the new forums (finally) in a month or two's time - which will mean that you will need a valid email addy, but it will be hidden, and no-one will be able to get it either. You can IM members instead, but not actually see their email addy.

That should go some way to satisfying worries about privacy

we're having new forums?

A new layout - they were 'showcased' quite some time ago by Bargib. Whilst they were both receiving of warm welcome, and critcism, they offer many features that you currently don't have. The most important is that they feature code corrections, so somethings will work better. Equally important they will also not show your email at all - you can communicate via IM's instead - without any member seeing or knowing your email. There will be other features that are less popular with some - like Avatar availability. It also improves on the current forums substantially in database and other features that are less important to the front end of the forums, but more important to the back end so to speak. However, I dunno about those as much.

I cannot remember it all - its been some time since I saw them. There was a thread to it in the feedback forum some time back. Stick the thread age to about a year old, and you should find it.

Don't forget to change it back etc.
