An open letter to visitors of TLR - registration

There has been a little grumbling lately about some of the changes taking place on this site. I wanted to, as a long standing member/moderator here, to set the record straight on one particular concern we have.

We have a section called Rules a Regs that can be found at the top of every screen portal into these forums. Some people, for whatever the reason, do not take the time to actually read them. This conclusion was reached simply because people ARE breaking some of these long-standing rules. I will touch on one of the the main points in this post.

Registering - Registration is not required to view current topics on the Bulletin Board; however, if you wish to post a new topic or reply to an existing topic registration is required. Registration is free and only takes a few moments. The only required fields are your username, which can be your real name or a nickname, and a valid e-mail address. The information you provide during registration is not outsourced or used for any advertising by The Lancers Reactor. If you believe someone is sending you advertisements as a result of the information you provided through your registration please notify us immediately.

This use of a valid email address can not be stressed enough. It is a privledge for everyone to post on these forums. If you do not feel using a valid email address during registration applies to you well quite frankly you are DEAD wrong. Failure to register a valid email address is grounds for being banned from the forums. Why you ask? Glad you asked!

If we (moderators) need to speak with you about something you posted on here we would much rather speak with you privately via email rather than getting into a public debate that is never a good ingredient on a public forum. We may start randomly checking on email addresses to ensure this requirement to post on these forums is being adhered to. Consider yourselves forewarned. If you excerise the privledge to post you comments on these forums, then you assume the responsibility to allow for open lines of communication just like everyone else including moderators.

If you have any problems with these web site rules and regulations, then you are free to just read the posts, or move along to another web site. We welcome and encourage people to speak their minds within the confines of the rules and regs. When you register on this site, you accept the terms of use policies. There really are no gray areas on this point.

As always, if you have a problem with something you've read on here, we have approximately 12739973987590 moderators

listed on our Staff page and you are free to contact any/all of them with your concerns. You can count on your problems/concerns being heard in their entirety and given all the attention it deserves.

Corsair, not to sound too much like the grand old leader, it doesn't matter if your adyy is too long, look at my homepage addy in the profile, its far too long to fit in on it, but still, if you click it, you get nicely forwarded to a new page, which will load my Homepage.

was it not said fairly recently that it was not the task of moderators to contact individuals about posts that had attracted moderator attention or action, but rather of the posters to contact the moderators if they had any issues with moderator action, and was it also stated that this would not make any difference and that the moderator's decision stands no matter what? if that was and still is the case, how does a valid or invalid e-mail address make any difference?

In my experience moderators from these forums have never initiated contact with a member, it's always been the other way around? so why the sudden change of policy?

is there another reason why you require verifiable e-mail addresses?

Actually the mods do email the people..I've received an email from a mod regarding the site before. So yes there are many cases where the mods email themembers first

hard part is, when a e-mail is fake and you can't contact th person. Then no choice but to post it.

I haven't entered a valid email addy because of 1 reason: Mailbots. Since all email addies are publicly vieuwable I decided to enter a fake one. I'm recieving to much spam already and I don't want more. SpamAnnihilator does a fine job but it ain't perfect.

Besides, I don't post here to cause problems and I don't start flamewars or respond to them. I come here for the mods for both SP and MP.

Secondly, I have added my own website into my profile and you can get my email addy from there if you really need it.

Are you visiting the same site as me?

This policy has been in effect for years. Not sure how someone could come to the conclusion it's a new policy....unless....they haven't actually read the rules and regs at all or glossed over that little gem.

As far as your other comment about referencing someone else quoting some cock-a-mammie policy saying it's not a moderators task to do something...I'd would welcome you finding the link to that post because I would bet it wasn't a moderator interpreting policy....far from it. We always have and will continue to make contact with people about their posts. Check your email.

And finally for the record, there is only a single reason we require a valid email address and it is to be able to reach out to people via said email account if we need to talk with you. No other reason, no conspiracy theories here. It is as real as it gets there. We're fanatics about privacy around here and take great pains to keep our email addresses locked down so tight Bill Gates himself couldn't get at 'em. If we have any notion there's been a compromise, we're on it like white on rice.

Thus the last sentence in the policy. Look, this isn't your normal cookie cutter forum, it was built from the ground up and by a man who's life revolved around securing a web site. Gibby used this as his testbed and to be honest, he did get quite proficient at it.

@/Shodan/ - Then you do risk being banned. Policy is policy. We make an exception to you then we'd have to make 1297598 other exceptions. The point here is you can still gleem your info about mods and such and read others posts without even registering, but this policy revolves around actual posting on the forums. I would think if you have something to offer to the community and you wanted to post about your brilliance on the forums or reply to help someone out then do like everyone else is required to do and put up that valid email address. If you can live without posting, then I don't ever see the need to get in contact with you about one of your posts.

Just changed mine to my new Gmail addy, and changed the username.
Personnally, i think that having the email addresses there is a good idea, and to prevent the spam you just ad some nonsensical text string that can be removed, like finalday said

Um...Mr. Kai-ping-fu, I just sent you an email. Care to explain why I got this?

Technical details of failure:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 10): 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

Obviously the email address you registered with ([email protected]) does not exist. Take this opportunity to put in your correct email address on your profile now while you still have access to this site. The choice is entirely yours at this point just like it was your choice to post here. Remember, you opened this can of worms. If you hadn't posted this would never have been an issue.

@Arania - PFY you did good thing and a bad thing at the same time.

Let me take this opportunity to bring up another well-established policy here:

Changing your profile - You may easily change any info stored in your registration profile, using the "profile" link located near the top of each page. Simply identify yourself by typing your username and password and all of your profile information will appear on screen. You may change any items, except your username.

We have our reasons for this policy. Remember, this is our web site, our rules. We welcome the oppotunity with work with our visitors and all we ask it to be kept informed of changes. Sort of like how we keep our visitors informed of changes we make. Fair is fair.
