I've had loads of problem with office, but I tend to reinstall nowadays if it turns a bit iffy....I know you said that you bought it pre-installed, but they should have given you some kind of CD too? Have you checked the disc your OS is on? Sometimes they bundle the lot together...?

Sometimes the AV modifies program files in Word to create additional protection against macro worms that used to wreak havoc with Word 6, Word 95, etc., etc. Don't know but you might have removed a necessary file from Word when you uninstalled Norton. As I recall, Norton can mess with your other program files as part of its antivirus scheme.

Others know more about this than I do by a very long shot. This is just a stab in the dark. If you cannot reinstall Word (which is what I'd do), try uninstalling McAfee and reinstalling Norton and then uninstall Norton without removing all of its system files.

If Word was pre-loaded and you weren't given CDs for it, it's probably a CAB on your HDD. Try looking for an MS Office reinstall, install or even uninstall executable in your Programs folders.

Hmm, I'll be looking for that reinstall Indy, I'm not going through the trouble of reinstalling Norton and uninstalling it agaín.
Funny how Antivirus systems can screw up your computer. I couldn't even select an option where it wouldn't remove system files, it just installed...

There's your problem . I'd reinstall Office; it's the best option in the long run.

I feared that much Esq. Unfortunately, reinstalling Office means buying it.
I'll have to give this some thought.
Are there any good word-ish programs available for free/cheap? I doubt it, but it's worth a try.

I'm not buying anything software related if I don't have to, unless I want to.
And I don't want to pay for something that's been given to me 2.5 years ago when I bought my comp.
Open Office works, but I'm not yet sattisfied. Maybe I need to get used to it. Anyway, it's the best I got at the moment that includes a spell checker (nothing beats the allmighty notepad imo) so it'll do for now.

OpenOffice is an excellent altenative to MS. If I didn't have a copy of Office 2000 (free of course ) then I would be using it myself. OO can open and create .DOC files, and is fully compatible with MS Office as I recall. It's a fine alternative Nickless, and you should be hapopy with it. Trust me .

oh please, thats like buying a moped when your harley breaks down. Excuse the harley comparison because MS Office is nowhere near perfect, not even close, but you get the idea. He wants to fix the problem not downgrade to baby level.

Anyway, as I said, I'm using OO and it works fine. it just takes some getting used to.
I have this nasty habbit of swapping charracters like for instance I type teh where I want to type the .
Word was Auto-correcting that and I had it working with OO, but somehow it doesn't work anymore.
Also, they have an alternative for Office Ass-istant. This nice small window pops up in teh lower right corner with a light bulb. I can click on it and then it tells me it changed these --> " to the ones used for writing conversations in book form.
It tells me everytime, also when it automatically changes a normal char to a capital. It;s very distracting and I have to click it because, well, I'm a clicking freak (make me mod! ).
Anyway, I have to figure out how to disable that...
Other then that, it's a nice program

By the time Office 2000 was on the store shelves, Word 2000 was bundled with MS Works as the word processor. Obviously, Works is far far cheaper than Office.

I think the suggestion was that if you "bought" MS Works 2003 (?) you'd have Word 2003 in that bundle along with somewhat useful other apps.
