If You MUST Build A New Gaming Rig Today?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

If You MUST Build A New Gaming Rig Today?

Would you opt for an AMD 64 939 socket mobo with only AGP or would you opt for a P4 LGA 775 925 chipset mobo with PCI Express?

This question is based of having to make the buy now and to assemble the rig now. No waiting for BTX, no waiting for some new chipset, etc.

Also, I am deliberately excluding Opterons, dual procs or any of that stuff from this consideration.

<Edit>
Let's also say that the budget will be skewed so that the there will be no skimping on the psu, mobo, proc, vid card or RAM (1gb).

You're going to get a lot of different answers here.

Bottom line if you're on a fairly tight budget AMD processors allow you the higher computing speed for less and allows for spending more bux on other components like hdd's vid cards' RAM etc. If you're going to hammer the guts out of the thing, Intel processors are more stable and much more expensive.

Since 2003 PC Magazine has been opting for the Intel's.

I just got a new gaming rig. Intel and PCI-E for me.

@Stinger

OK I added another parameter. No limit on certain components.

It is my impression that neither ATI no nVidia makes have a PCI-E card that corresponds directly to their top line fastest AGP card. Which is part of the reason for this question.

In terms of performance, there is quite a bit of difference between AMD64s and P4s. For that reason, I'd go for a 939-based CPU, especially considering the fact that the majority of the best cards today are still AGP. Also, the next SB card (the "Audigy 4" is ALSO AGP, and not PCI-E.

That being said, I would wait for BTX, DDR2, and PCI-E in one MB before buying .

Yeah but it looks like it will be a very very long wait. BTX has taken off like a lead balloon.

I've noticed that Indy. I would have expected at least *one* BTX case by now. Fortunately, I'm in no hurry to upgrade .

alienware all the way

Post Fri Nov 05, 2004 7:59 pm

Screw that, I'd build my own damn computer out of parts I bought of Ebay
If you're Budget limited I Grabbed Alienware quality stuff for 600$$
Off of eBay. eBay if your friend.
Personally I think AMD to Intel is like an Apple to an Orange, AMD is blazing fast as Intel is slower and perhaps sloppier, but much more stable.
So, unless you are truly worried about system crashes, (most don't really lose data)
You should grab up the Intel.
AGP is by far more used.PCI-E is the next big thing so they're going to start going for those, opt for both.

I just got my LGA775 P4 and PCI-E rig. If I had the money I would have got DDR2.

WAIT TILL PCI-X AND DDR 2 COMES OUT FOR AMD!!!!

if not... AMD systems are better for gaming (memory), + PCI-X dosn't have THAT much better timings than AGP.

Only advantage of PCI-X is what is called SLI. It is where you can have dual video cards creating one image. With dual 6800 Ultras, DOOM3 was played at well over 70FPS with MAX resoulution and MAX AA. Nothing will beet that... But do you really have $1000+ to spend on vid cards alone????

actually doom 3 was played at max everything on just on 6800 ultra.
and 6800's dont have sli, only 6600GT's do.
