computer crawling - tech help!

ok i have this issue with my comp now. its slow. VERY slow. i dont know why. i press tab after typing username, to go to password, then to subject as i make this thread. but it took a while for the cursor to switch. it used to be pretty much instantaneous.

click on start loads the start menu. it takes about 30 seconds to load completely. another 5 each for going to programs > folder > program. its annoying me alot.

i defraged my stuff. i have about 20gigs free out of a 40gig disk. 1.7 ghz. win xp. it used to run fine. any ideas?

oh and i dont think im overloading the comp with tasks. right clicking on desktop takes a damn long time. thats very sad. should i try to reduce number of actively running programs?

i have : nvidia settings, msn messenger, yahoo messenger, skype, quicktime (any ideas how to get rid of this? i can't seem to) SETI@home, zonealarm (not pro), norton antivirus 2004 and sound controls.

256mb ram btw.

My first thoughts would be to update your anti virus, use spybot and adaware and then do a full scan of your computer.

seti@home sounds like a safe bet to me, uses a lot of resources.

seti@home isn't the cause. i been using it over 2 years. hasn't done anything to be for a year and a half.

and i dont like using spybot and stuff. it just takes more ram to keep them running. i want to run as few as possible. what about me having windows media player on all the time ? would that contribute to the choppiness?

You can have them and run them and then shut them down when not needed to save ram

minimal for XP esp with all that stuff running. i'd double that if were you. memory's not expensive, get your hand in your pocket.

build a dual Xeon machine with 2 gigs of ram.

Thats the real minimum standards for XP Pro.

It probably is a lack of RAM, but one would think that the problems would have evidenced themselves before now. Your problems could also be caused a worm, or SETI could be using up all of your resources. Those damn distributed computing apps seem to do that spontaneously sometimes (I've seen it ). For a start, use CTRL-ALT-DELTE and tell us which apps are running in the background and the CPU time that is being utilised by them (or just post a screenshot).

Upgrade RAM

Run Sbybot and Adaware, shutdown all other process when doing this. You might be shocked to see all of the things those programs can find. I have had those problems too, they fixed it.

Are you running XP SP2?

i dled sp2 a month ago i think. but the comp keeps saying im on sp1. and like i was saying earlier, this problem did not come up until a few weeks ago. and i only just scanned the whole thing with everything under the sun two days ago. everything's just fine. just that its crawling. i should get more ram then. but mum'll flip if i ask her to spend another cent on the comp. i dont get pocket money. im gonna get a job.

unter task manager, what is your total remaining physical memory (under the performance tab)
and, in the processes tab, order by CPU usage, and what is the highest user?

When the comp slows down, is there a lot of hard drive workin going on? Telltale sign of insufficient RAM when it uses virtual memory.
