Rome: Total War (help me out here)

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Rome: Total War (help me out here)

I think most of you know this game?
Well, I'm considering buying it, my computer is certainly good enough, except for one part, the graphics card. A GeForce 2 MX, to be precise.
My problem: will my computer (512 RAM, 2.4 GHz) be able to run the game with this card?

Lose the video card and get something better. A GeForce2 MX will NOT cut it. Not with today's games. Besides the video card, your system should be good enough to play Rome: Total War.

Unfortunately the computer was donated to me by a friendly relative, and I have no money whatsoever to upgrade.

You will be unable to view in game anything - simply put it will be as choppy as you can get. I have my Radeon 9800 pro - and whilst having some issues i tried out my old 64mb GeForce mx440 (think it was..or 400) and to put it mildly, It was more like watching a slide show than playing a game...........

Yes, that was what I feared. Guess I'm stuck with Red Alert 2 then.

just buy a new graphics card, they aren't all that expensive...I have a FX 5700 it was like $120. I have 512 RAM and 1.6ghz P4 and RTW runs fine on 1024 x 768. It might actually work with the video card but I wouldn't be on it. RTW is an awsome game though upgrading your graphics card would be a really good idea and well worth the investment.

My system is almost the same spec as yours Corsair, 'cept im running an 128mb FX5900. Rome: Total War runs pretty smooth with it but it will chug a little from time to time with medium settings, so I would be very suprised if your GF2 cut the mustard even at very low settings. Totally reccomend the game though, I haven't had much of an opportunity to play it but im gobsmacked with what I have seen, best strategy game I've ever played by far.

it should be alright if you turn the unit sizes down to smallest. And don't use fire arrows. But then you could have no epic battles. But hey the campaign mode might be all you want Just auto resolve every battle but don't blame me when the computer makes your 1000 man army lose against 200 pesky gauls!

I spent the time since it was announced to the point I got it (September), my aunt and uncle took it away from me until I take SAT's. DANGIT!!! I SPENT SO LONG WAITING FOR IT NOW I HAVE TO WAIT TILL NOVEMBER 6!!!. Well, not so far away now, but it was 2 months ago!

I can't wait to play it.
My turn to whip this thing out... It's not great, but it gets by very well indeed.

Barton 2500+ @ 3200
PMI Turbo Memory 3200
DFI Ultra Infinity
120GB SATA HDD
Radeon 9600XT

It will play Farcry at high detail 800x640. Wont have problems with R:TW

(Sorry for gravedigging, but hey- it's important)

OMFG I JUST DOWNLOADED THE R:TW DEMO! AND IT RAN WITH NO SLOWDOWN!*

Sorry, I'm just a bit happy. This means I can buy it! Without having to upgrade my computer! I can only say it was worth the hour it took to download it- I played the Tutorial and the Battle of Trebia. I won the Battle, but with high casualties.

I'm just so hyper and excited!

*Unfortunately, I had to play with all the graphical effects off, so it looked more like Medieval: TW than those fancy pics you see in magazines, but still! It's still beautiful even so, and it was SO much fun! I still have to upgrade my computer, but at least now it's not as urgent.

We're all very happy for you, but I do not believe that your post was important enough for you to dig up this thread. *Shakes finger at Corsair*

Thats it, I will put in my old card and flog it hard until it plays it.
My Radeon still has issues causing the acccelerator to freeze every now and then. Most times the VDU recover sorts it out, but not always. Gotta try now i know an older card can manage!

Esq put your finger away. The thread isn't that old and Corsair was perfectly within his rights to update us on his Total War dilemma despite anyones disinterest in the subject.

I don't necessarily agree with you, however since it *is* his thread and you support him... *puts wagging finger away* .

RTW is a great game but I suppose you cant run it on a Geforce 2, you can however get the same thing except Geforce 4 MX for like what, 70-80 bucks. Though I highly recommend a better card, due simply to the fact that this one doesnt support Pixel Shaders and almost all new games require it (2 mentions would be Thief III and Deus Ex 2) However if RTW doesnt, then I suppose you can upgrade to that one. In any case, Red Alert 2 is a great game, some of my fondest gaming moments are from it (like this one time I played the Country Swing map with superweps, lost everything but one marine, i garrisoned him in a port-o-potty and the russkies nuked the port-o-potty, god that was FUNNY!) but if you want more great 2d Games that your system will run well, I highly recommend Warlords Battlecry 3, its 2d, and very very very good at that, its kinda half-rpg half-rts, like you have a hero that goes from game to game, gains levels and is basically the general of your army. It would take too long to explain all the facets of gameplay here, but grab a demo im sure youll like it.
