It''s a fair cop.

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Closer to "A fair Catch".

Cop - 1. slang, to catch, nab. 2. To steal, filch. 3. lang, to clead guilty, Cop a plea.

I think that it is a British colloquial phrase that means that someone has been caught "red-handed".

"its a fair cop guv"....its like saying "ok ok fair enough, you got me"....can be used in several different contexts, the most common being the image of the "good natured burglar" (you know the type - black and white striped shirt, black mask, big black bag with "swag" written on it) being caught red-handed in someone's living room - he puts his hands up and says "its a fair cop guv".

However nowadays its used regularly as something you say when you are caught playing a joke on someone etc.

Breaking it down...

"a fair cop" - an undeniable arrest
"guv" - governer, slang associated with someone who holds a position of power, usually the "Chief Inspector" or the "Mob Boss".

can be prefixed with "strewf, cor blimey" or "strike-a-light" but generally is suffixed with "guv'nor" and "you got me bang to rights"

Post Fri Oct 22, 2004 5:43 am

well..........there are more meanings

to 'cop off'
you've 'copped' it

I woulda thought 'got it/me' is a better meaning - as in you got me, you've got me etc.

Apart from 'cop off' - which obviuosly means make with sweaty animal noises.

I see it as similar to "A Fair Call", or like seeing something thats deserved.

That's what I'd always assumed. That it meant "busted." Or "got me."

But, contextually, it didn't always fit. Also, I couldn't quite fathom why a criminal would commend a policeman for having him (constitutionally) dead to rights on an arrest as to make comment that what the officer did was "fair."

Post Fri Oct 22, 2004 6:22 am

In addition to my earlier definition, it also means that a person deserves what they get. After being caught doing something of course .

I remember it most from Monty Python when a fish was left on the landing, and the man couldn't identify it's diocese, so they called the "church police" who arrested him and he said "it's a fair cop, but society's to blame" which the Church Police said "Agreed, now let's conclude this arrest with a hymn....All Things Bright and Beautiful, all Creatures fair and small....."
