And since you are overclocking, I'd think about beefing up your cooling. The temps you report seem a bit on the high side.

thanks indy(should i call you Ed?), but i need to know what temperature
is dangerous for my card first, before overclocking it.

Also, the sapphire 9800pro "ultimate" is no good as a comparison, because it
uses passive cooling, and so the maximum clock speeds will be different, I.e.
the core clock will be lower, but the ram clock will be higher (because that is
cooled, unlike the normal 9800pro)

are you using the stock cooler? get something like an Arctic VGA cooler with blower, costs about a tenner (from your fav online retailer of performance hardware! ) and get sum case fans in.

the more you o'clock, the hotter stuff gets; simple as that. there is no set max temperature, but it starts getting ropey over 50 and dangerous in the 60s and meltdown in the 70s. Cooling is SO important. stock coolers are fine for everyday use, but games really hammer the processors esp anything 3D.

I have 2 front case intake fans, 2 rear case intake fans, a huge regulated PSU fan, a regulated psu fan, twin hdd fan/coolers, a ventral fan array, a northbridge fan/cooler, a vga fan/cooler/blower and a scratch-built dust extractor which also removes hot air.

That must be louder than the planes I fly!

soundproofed case in fact you can hardly hear it.

Okay thanks taw, and you sorta answered my next question:
which cooler should i get? The Arctic cooling rev.4 ATI 1, or the ATI 3

i want to get the ATI 3, because it cools the ram aswell as the core, unlike the
ATI 1 (you know where i am gonna buy them from? )

Kind of raises a question, though, about your temperatures at baseline. How far below the 40C and 50C readings are they at 2D and 3D before you OC?

Maybe you just need better cooling from the start?

Indy, the temperatures before and after the OC are the same (maybe a degree
hotter in 3d after the OC)

although, i cant tell the Ram Temperature, but i havent OC'd the Ram by very much.

I think someone else referred to the MSI Neos a while back. As I recall, Taw runs one himself or put one together for someone else and thought well of it.

Well, you have at least two options for enhanced cooling of the video card. You could swap out the fan and heat sinks for something more serious from an aftermarket shop which should run you no more than about US$30 and should include heat sinks for the card memory or you could install (and use up a PCI bay) a blower fan which costs about US$15 to supplement the existing air handling system on your card and by moving the hot air out faster.

So you're going to stay with the non-LGA775 intel chips and forego PCI-X enabled mobos? Also, as I recall, ASUS has come out with an LGA775 board that supports both PCI-X and AGP video.

i use that board myself and I think it's excellent. buy in confidence from Europe's leading on-line retailer of performance hardware (whoever that is) oh and go for the better cooler every time.

Indy, yes, i am forgoing the whole "new" LGA775, PCI-X, DDR2 thing, because
well i dont have a job (i'm only 14) and i just cant afford it, do you know how
expensive PC stuff is here in the UK compared to america?
And even then, its like buying a whole new PC!, to get the processor, you need:
the new Mobo, DDR2(thats currently slower than DDR), and a PCI-X GPU!
It just isnt cost effective yet.
Also, yep, i think i'll get a cooler for my card plain one, and some ramsinks

BTW, i have three case fans, one on the front, the side, and the back.
the front and side blow into the case, the front one blowing onto the hard disk
and the side onto the ram/mobo, and the rear fan is extracting the Hot Air,
helped by the PSU, with its two extractor fans.

I'd leave the LGA775 stuff for the moment, if I were you. Intel have a few problems with it (heat) Give it about 6 months until new production comes on stream. The only worthwhile 64-bit solution is (and it galls me to say it) the AMD Opteron 64. But Intel Socket 478 Northwoods are the safest (and most overclockable) buy. imo.

No, taw, you sent me out a OCUK brand card (although, it looks EXACTLY
the same as the powercolor)

well, Taw, on overclockers is £61 inc Vat = $108.56
and on Froogle(us), the cheapest i found it was $74.00 = £41.57
so in america, it's about £41, and on with you, its £61, so thats no comparison
