External Modems.

I hate them. I jsut cant seem to get my webserver online from my private ip addr. this started from the moment i changed to external modem. last time global webserver was functioning smoothly using dyndns but that was under internal modem. I guess it has something to do with router configuration. I need some help in allowing http connections run through my router/firewalll.

Post Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:07 pm

My external modem/router:
Aztech DSL.
Ip address:external:automatic (ISP dependant)
Ip address:internal:10.0.0.2
Public/Private Ports opened by redirection to 10.0.0.4:
5000,8080,80.
Routing configuration is done by connecting to 10.0.0.2. it is displayed in Html format and will ask for admin password upon connection.

My Pc.
Ip addr:10.0.0.4(fixed DHCP)
Ports opened:all (firewall disabled)

well i'm no computer genius (ask esq or taw for a computer genius if you want one) but shoud you be giving that info away?
especially you're IP...that can be tracked to where you live...
and telling that you're firewall is disabled, definate no no.

i have every intention of getting the pc firewall up after getting the services i wish to enable. and that private ip address... is unconnectable. the router blocks it to a degree that i cant even connect any advanced services. without knowledge of my ISP ip there is no way another person can infiltrate my router as far as i know. only an entity of the same network will be able to make such connections.

@wolfy: those are hos local IP's, my server is 192.168.0.1, router is 1.1, and this one is *checks* 0.136. You can ahve my global IP address, but it ise seless because one: its my router, and i dont think theres much info of value on that anyway, and two: i can change it by rebooting the Router.

As for your problem: ive no idea, what is your network topology?

Post Sat Sep 18, 2004 3:17 am

its not really a topology at all. its built in to the modem. the problem is getting services past the router in and out. practiaclly i cant get my IIS to be functional on dyndns anymore. this is what i want to get it fixed.

There's your problem; IIS . Full of holes *shakes head in disgust*. So have you allowed incoming connections to port 8000/8080, or whichever port that the web server is using?

By the way, you should use Apache. It's free, and is a bloody fine program.

Wolfy - Genius?!? Not me! I'm just a dabbler... at least until I get a full-tome job, then I'll be a professional .

sw - Genius?!? Not me! I'm just a dabbler...

I hope you just didn't call me 'sw'!!

Post Mon Sep 20, 2004 12:11 am

I would imagine that it would be 8080, but some opt for 8000.

Wolfy - Sorry; it was nearly midnight when I wrote that .

Taw - Thanks but, as I said, I need to give the Australian job market a good attempt first. I owe it to myself to "stick ut out" for a year. By the way, what do you mean that it is so "me"? Full of ginger beer drinkers and Arts graduates?

Post Mon Sep 20, 2004 8:19 am

wasnt http using port 80? anyways i'll try to open those port 8000 and 8080. About apache.. yes i know its good however i need more knowledge in php to run such stuff .
Off topic: I have just Graduated and got my degree today. yay! im in 2nd class upper without me knowing

Post Tue Sep 21, 2004 2:44 am

HTTP uses port 80, but a web server must utilise a separate port, as you will have conflicts with other protocols.

So you have a Degree, eh? Nice work! I just hope that yours actually gets you a job; mine hasn't!

Frankly i have been driven mad for that past week just getting this IIS to host web and accesible from WAN... and still to no avail. damn! nothing seems to work..

Post Wed Sep 22, 2004 3:17 am

Ajim - We need more information to help you man! Oh yeah, and get rid of IIS .

Taw - I remember, and I'll say now what I said then; Lexmark? *Shudder*

Post Wed Sep 22, 2004 8:20 pm

Wife has absolutely no problems with Lexmark printers. Must be a regional thing.

Post Thu Sep 23, 2004 12:13 am

There's nothing "wrong" with Lexmark, but when I was working for the "Royal Australasian College of Surgeons", we had nothing but trouble with one of them. I've also heard many stories for people who have had problems . Still, I wouldn't necessarily criticise anyone for owning one, nor advise people against buying them .
