Video Cards

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Video Cards

Hey guys, this morning i went to best buy and they were having a clearance sale...(go figure after a hurricane or 2 they would do that )... and i came across a wonderful discovery..a Nvidia Geforce FX 6800 256mb card!!!! whats so wonderful about the above discovery was the F*** up on the price...99.99!!

it is a 399.99 PCI express card!
the only crappy part i had to get a new motherboard..one of those new MSI boards that supports PCI express but hey what is $150 when i saved a lot more than that?

so what does everyone think of the Nvidia line and the FX 6800?
Also does anyone else have PCI express capability..i know it is like really really new but i was just wondering...(i am soo damn giddy )

final note...Why do they call it PCI eventhough it is NOT PCI it is AGP on methamphedamines!!!

Good for you, (grumble grumble)
its called PCI-X because thats what it is, it is NOT
AGP

you tell 'im, AoD!

those new MSi PCI-Xpress boards are wonderful, DS. Enjoy. try out the MAT settings in the CMOS, it's dynamic overclocking.

as far as the vga card itself is concerned, I'm an ATI man meself. Nvidia's fine, you got an excellent buy, but ATi has the performance edge and generally the build quality too (control over oems)

BUT..... the nVidia draws a lot of juice. What is your psu wattage? Normally, it is recommended that you have at least a 410watt power supply to feed your card.

I think you may find that the card requires its own power connection ... unless that's only on the Ultras. Not sure.

The ATI cards don't have the same hunger but you may not find that at Best Buy.

*walks off mumbling something about luck*

I have a good power supply. i think, but it runs the card well enough. you are right though, ATI does have the edge at times but i like the stability the Nvidia cards have given me throughout the years.

This PCI X is awesome though Doom3 looks like the imps and demons are coming more motion picture style than game like. I had a FX 5700 before this card and the game looked good...but DAMN!!!

Hell even goold ole freelancer has shown me a thing or 2!! some MINOR but noticalble additives. but i am hooked on this PCI X!!....Does ATI have one yet? cause my friend is jelous and he will only use ATI and he currently has the Radeon 9800..(i think thats what it is...all i know it is the high end ATI card) and wants a PCI X card...but he is not wanting to convert to N Vidia

any suggestions?

Yes. The X800 comes in both PCI X and AGP flavors. But unless you can find another goof at Best Buy they cost as much as what your 6800 SHOULD have cost.

FYI, in the reviews of the latest and greatest cards from both makers, the comments have been that it isn't the PCI X that you are noticing. It is the latest and greatest GPUs from nVidia and ATI that are knocking your sox off.

Your friend should get pretty much the same result with an X800 AGP card. In your specific case, though, you got quite the excellent bargain so please don't take this comment as a negative about how you're now setup at all. Since your friend most likely will have to spend more money just for the card than you did for mobo and card, I thought I'd mention this to try to save him a buck or two.

Also, with the ATI X800, ultimate performance is much more dependent upon how fast and muscular the cpu also is. The slower/more feeble the cpu, the less of a bang you'll get out of the X800.

That is a bargain, especially for PCI-Express. Nice!

Jusst for the record, how good is a Nvidia Geforce4 MX 400?

Post Sun Sep 12, 2004 2:50 am

tis a peice of crap, by todays standards, but that depends on what you wanna use it for. Its ok unless you want to play all the latest games.
