Once upon a time in the US. If you were old enough to be drafted into the military, you were old enough to vote... and still are, AND old enough to drink.

Now, you're old enough to join the military voluntarily and to vote but not to drink. Which makes me wonder, if they ever were to reinstitute the draft, would the drinking age come back down again?

Note on the army /drinkin thing. With proper military ID, a solider can have a beer at the PX at 18.

@indy does a drinking age reeeaaallly matter? the legal drinking age over here is 18, but I was buying booze by the time I was 14 and drinking in pubs when I was 16. Surely, its how you drink rather than when you drink right?

Interesting you should ask because, in fact, I used not to think it mattered at all. The old where there is a will there is a way adage.

But now I think it does, and this is how. Essentially, couple the first thought above with a prolongation of the period of time in which such more surreptitious behavior needs to be pursued. What you get, I think, is bad drinking habits. I firmly believe that all the binge drinking that goes on today is due to the fact that, until 21, it is illegal and, therefore, necessary to maximize on every opportunity presented ... and then, in a rather perverse top-down influence, the older illegal drinkers set the fashion for the younger ones to that, now, you have 12 and 13 year olds binge drinking.

I think it is pathetic.

Then put on your purple velveteen suit and 2 metre wide hat (complete with ostrich feather) and the cruise around your local neighbourhood at 5mph

@indy agreed. interesting though that this argument can be applied to a number of illegal pursuits....and is a good argument in general for abolishing restrictions. eg. would we reduce the rate of underage pregnancies by allowing p0rn to be viewed from an early age? Sweden did. Can we reduce the number of heroin addicts by freely providing them with the drug? Switzerland did. Therefore, could we not reduce binge drinking and alcoholism by allowing the use of alcohol from an early age, without restriction?

The main reason I started so early was simply because my entire family were temperance methodists....the "do not drink it, its evil" approach coupled with me seeing my friends happily drinking at parties, offered far too much temptation for rebellion.

Grom, the drinking age thing here in the US and more locally is, get caught, get busted, and then they go after who ever gave/sold it to you. They are getting so strong with it, they will arrest and prosicute your parents even, if they are the ones that give it to you. People have been getting shot at/killed at minor parties that envolve drinking.
