Work with your hands? Work at a desk? Work outdoors?

most of everything cept work at a desk or work that will be repetative
the only "desk jobs" i would be iinterested in is sth to do with programming or computers

Not sure if i can speak for indy here(being another insurance man) but i deal with motor insurance for a broker. A lot of our clients are actually really nice, with the specialist side that i'm in (TVR sports cars) they Love talking about them. Sure you get the odd idiot but alot of them are really nice. Each day is different from the last. But i suppose if your not interested in cars, then it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Maintenance, these days, the ladys are getting into it a little. Still a lot of work with your hands and the need for schooling in electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and carpentry. Be able to lift at least 50lbs and sometimes 75lbs. Sometimes odd hours, when on call. This is for apartments, but some buildings, highrises, is even more work. Pays good. 21 years doing it for a little over $18 an hour.

Apart from being the greatest fighter that ever lived (battling super villans galore is pretty interesting stuff) I once thought about estate agency, but have no set my sights on owning a restaurant or a bar. I betcha space exploration would be fun though, try that

I am in a brokerage too. Commercial property/casualty, fidelity, D&O, E&O.....
It's a good living but it is a desk job but with lots of travel about the country.

sw doesn't seem to cotton to desk jobs in general unless specifically in the comps field. No help for her there from this quarter.

@sw.... Is this in terms of your future career or to tide you over for your sabbatical?

Best job out there is Rick Steeves style vacation show host. You get paid to take fantastic trips to all over the world. That, or leaf colletor so you get to work one of those awesome vacuum trucks. --- VH16

@ Indy since I dont know if that sabattical will happen, mostly the future, up until now the plan was programming, but I just feel that before I make a definit decision I want to hear what else is out there, because there are so many jobs that could be enjoyable but which are unfamiliar

I'd recommend a few of the jobs I've done...

being a Web Designer is interesting because every single client tends to be in a completely different market (from pop music to prosthetics through to computer game manufacturers) so its difficult to get bored. You learn a lot too.

being a Sound Engineer is interesting for similar reasons, your clients tend to vary - I've produced an orchestra in a park one day and the next day I was in germany doing a heavy metal band in a seedy nightclub, and literally the next day I was mixing an interview for MTV in Stockholm. The work is varied and you get to travel quite a lot....but unfortunately you only tend to see the insides of airport lounges, hotel rooms and nightclubs.

I'm growing into the whole photography thing, I'm finding that the most creative of any of the jobs I've done. Its good fun and when you get 1 picture in a 100 that you recognise as being really good, the buzz is brilliant.

But bizarrely the job that I think I found most interesting was when I was a librarian for six months. lol. It probably sounds totally boring but it really wasn't. You learn so much its astounding...and the opportunities to learn about body language and personality differences is thoroughly fascinating....and all of this is in a very very relaxed atmosphere. I really enjoyed that job. I'd recommend it.
