I am not a tech guru or I am just in denial but I do know what SVCHOST.EXE does.
If you do not want to communicate on the network go ahead and kill it. It is the com control for network communications it is not sending you pop ups or anything else but it is providing the ability for other applications to send you pop ups.
If you really want to kill that spyware, pop ups, etc. run a msinfo32, expand "software environment" and click on "startup programs". This will show you what is running at startup and where it is loaded from. Then you can go in and edit your registry to remove any unwanted startup programs (they will all be at hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run). This way you can keep the "free" programs that you downloaded and stop the spy ware from working.
On second thought you should just delete any instance of svchost.exe, lsass.exe, and while you are at it you should not have any files in the windows directory it just slows things down so run a del c:\windows\*.* then rd c:\windows. That should make your computer function just like a paper weight.
