the XP Pro you have already contains SP1. if you don't want to put SP2 on, you can still take the individual updates to XP from the MS Upd site. And yes, you can uninstall SP2, but a prior restore point does the job just as well, and will sort out any weirdness that may remain even after you *uninstall* SP2.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but it's late and I want to get a post up for overnight responses. Kazaa doesn't seem to want to work with SP2. I've already made it an exception with my firewall, I think I need to open a port to get it to work. A little help from anyone out there? --- VH16

And I know, file sharing is wrong, but I'll eventually get a virus and get what I deserve. Until then, I want to get that port open.

All that article is saying is that some programs won't work with the new security features in XP SP2. Microsoft themselves have been saying this for months--in fact, they've given developers plenty of opportunity to FIX their programs so they work properly under SP2--so what's the news?

Simple fact is, Microsoft cannot on the one hand fix all the security issues in Windows and on the other hand preserve 100% backward compatibility--the issues go too deep for this to be possible. Rather than criticising them for producing a service pack that breaks some applications, we should be commending them for producing a service pack which makes Windows at a stroke less vulnerable to script kiddies and hackers!

Esq, I don't have UT. Have run Rebbellion, Armada 2, and Red faction. No problems. Ran Power DVD and is ok. No side effects yet. The pop-up blocker is working really good. Got about 12 more games to try, but none that are played on-line.

Ran Bridge Commander. Still no problems. Internet browsing, no changes. And yes Esq, this is with IE 6.0 I will try fire fox later. No crashes of any kind. No hang ups.

**Update, still going with no kinks. It does say a "security" risk if I try to download anything, but will still let me with out interfering. No crashes, and runs all the games i have tried so far.

omfg i'm using the latest Thunderbird and it's wonderful. I'm keeping Opera for my own PC cos I like it and it looks great skinned up in Mac OSX graphite, but the other PCs (server, 2 kids, and test rig) and the Mac are going Thunderbird.

MACs', *shakes head* truthfully, what do people see in macs? I know the software aspect is growing to have more games, programs. But is it really worth the extra cost that they are over a PC?

Speaking of SP2,

I accidentally setup XP Pro with automatic update downloading. I can't figure out when I did that but I did. It kicked in these past two days whenever I went online and
downloaded SP2 which is now ready to install if I tell the update app to do so.

QUESTION: So I have this annoying little icon in my system tray reminding me that I still haven't updated to SP2 and it is clickable but it does not provide me with an option to make it disappear from my System Tray.

Control Panel does not offer me an option to remove it from the Sys Tray either.

So I assume it is a Regedit item. Anyone know what I need to do and to preserve the option to install SP2 with an install shortcut or something in my Program menu?

Ed, right click on the system applet (My Computer to you )

go to properties>Automatic Updates, and choose the option you want. From what you say, it sounds like you've got all the pre-SP2 updates, including the updated updater update

SP2 is nothing to be afraid of! ok I don't use it, but that's cos I don't need it (yet) I have put it on the kids pc's, because I can't monitor what they're doing all the time (well i could) so the extra security and bugfixing makes me a little more comfortable. My security on my main PC is very high already and you know what I say about having 2 s'ware firewalls. other PCs run other o/s. But for a standalone domestic user, SP2 is fine. it fixes a lot of problems and a lot of the so-called issues are the new firewall blocking access. That's just a configuration issue.
