What on earth is that? I have win XP and no win XP explorer......you mean IE? Have you got the latest service pack and hack fix...i mean security vulnerability fixes?

Unlike my friends before me, I actually do know what you're talking about.
Since I've read somewhere that noone here cares if one has illegal software, I shall speak freely.
In most (99.9%) illegal copies of WinXP (home, pro, corporate) there is a bug in Windows Explorer (explorer.exe process) which crashes it too often for comfort.
This happens to some legal copies as well (some 20%) so I might be wrong about you having some no-no discs
Anywayz, there is a strange "fiX" that works in some cases. Here's what you should do:
As soon as Win starts up and you're nice and logged on, run task manager (alt+ctrl+del), goto processes, right-click explorer.exe and change process priority to high or to realtime if you have a fast PC (p4 1600 and + MHz). Do the same with iexplore.exe if and when it's active. This will make it so that explorer doesn't crash; it will (kind of) freeze instead.
When this happens, you need to run task manager again, and change explorer.exe priority back and forth, randomly, for a few times (10 times will suffice) after which you return it to high/realtine, and close task manager. Approx. 5-10 seconds later you can resume your work as usual.
If this doesn't help, pray that this bug is fixed in SP2 and d/l it.

Win XP Explorer is the Base GUI that Windows is built pon, it manages the desktop, taskbar, start menu, my computer, desktop icons. Not to we confused with Windows explorer, the directory browser. Ive actually terminated WIN explorer a couple of times from processes. Basically all that happenes is all your icons and the start menu dissapear for about 10-30 seconds then they reappear as explorer restarts.

Process name: explorer.exe
Base priority: Normal
Executed: automatically upon logon
Username: <<User>>

what have i done in the past when this happens i say bad words and restart the system or keep working, the system runs fine after the crash i just don't want it to happen anymore. i have run scan disk nothing comes up

A small note, Norton has a program called SystemWorks and in it, Noton WinDoctor, it has helped me fix a few problems.

is it online or d/l install?

Runs around $69.00 and I picked it up at office depot. You might be able to download it, if you have DSL or cable. It has AV, Web tools, Win doctor, Disk doctor, Unerase, Speed disk, Cleansweep,and A back-up program.

@Wiz, no, I have just had Norton for about 5 years and it has never failed me. It has helped fix, watch and Av my computers for a lot of things.

I agree Indy; it's a VERY small comfort!

There is a possibility that it is a RAM issue, as I kept getting similar crashes when I had dodgy RAM. Still, if this problem has come upon you suddenly, it's unlikely.

i paid $1010 US to have this computer built i better not have "dodgy RAM" or a couple of tech's will be fixing it
anyway i tried the prority change once and it seems fine but its a little slugish to start from hibernation but that i can put up with

oh oh ... hibernation ... not necessarily a big problem but I think there are a few here who would recommend that you not use hibernation. I seem to remember back a few months ... was it May? Anyway....
