It's really not about the solar sails you know. It's more about letting a certain neighboring country know that they can and do send missiles up too.

It's not a new idea, but it's good that it is in the experimental stages (finally). The only concern would be how to prevent g-forces from working within the cabin. As the craft would keep accelerating, you' would need something to keep the pilots from suffocating.

like sailing you could control the sail an if neccesary lower it

I thought the whole thing fasinating. I saw an episode of DS9 which had Jake and Ben Sisko build and fly a Bajoran sail ship and sailed to Cardasia. The artical reminded me of it.

Final - Ah, but they had inertial dampeners. Otherwise, they would have been killed by the acceleration. That's what I was referring to Shroud.
