When I was supposed to get braces, I had to get retainers first because I had a major overbite that got me called "bucktooth." So after several months of wearing retainers, my teeth were almost where they were supposed to be. The problem was I had a HUGE gap between my two front teeth. That's where the braces came in. They closed the gap in about a year and a half. So, I'm glad I got the braces when I did. Of course, this was about 7 years ago. The last time I went in to the dentist, they told me my wisdom teeth were coming in sideways. They told me to have them removed. I could feel the wisdom teeth coming in before they said that, no big deal. They didn't bug me, and they don't bug me now. I don't trust dentists. I never liked them. I haven't been to a dentist for over a year now. I keep brushing my teeth the way I'm supposed to, and flossing and all that junk and I haven't needed to go back to the dentist. I don't think I ever will.

@Mee.

I'd get those wisdom teeth taken out. I had to get all 4 of mine removed after
they started to give me no end of headaches. No room in my mouth for them
and they were pushing the molars in front of them totally out of alignment.

I waited too long to have them done so they had gotten really big and they had
to break them to pull them out ... and all this by a dentis who didn't believe in gassing me so I was wide awake through the whole experience, two sessions, one per side, two weeks apart to allow me to "recover."

Hope you don't have to go through that.

If you have the room for them to grow in, there's no problem. If they're not
coming in as they should... like you say sideways, that can cause you other
problems later, including throwing your jaw out of alignment.

Humans have evolved at this point so that the jaw no longer is big enough to
let those teeth come in as they should.

hm. so it'll be couple thousand years before our genes realise we hate braces and adjust accordingly?

btw i never had braces. dentist say i dont need them, then again there's this one incisor (no.. the pointy one, beside the rabbit teeth, like dracula's) on top right of my mouth that kinda overgrew or somethign, it's poped out of its place a little.

i completely sympathise. I've had two braces and 6 teeth removed so that the braces could actually work. But, since those great wisdom teeth came through, my mouth is mashed again

I was lucky. I got mine on the NHS.

ur lucky if u can get an NHS dentist in cumbria. Everyone that i know are full up, i've even heard of one woman who has to travel from this area to birkenhead on the wirral for treatment which is a 250mile round trip

its the same down here. I moved to canterbury this time last year...at which point I looked for a dentist in the area. There were 20. 1 was NHS...and its about 15 miles from here.

So I signed onto the waiting list and I'm due for my first check up this coming october - a total of about 15 months. Its disgusting - especially as I know how much of my wage packet goes out to these ****ers.

Meanwhile my wisdom teeth are giving me grief - so I've racked up about £400 in private dental work over the last year. Mainly in antibiotics and such like. However the private dentist did tell me last year that I could have my wisdom teeth removed for a generous £1500. All in one lump sum of course....yeah right.

Roll on October so I can pay my £20 and get them whipped out by an NHS Dentist (knee on chest, pliers in mouth)...*shudder*.

for gods sake Grom, this ain't the middle ages anymore.. where the local barber got your teeth out by getting those insane oversized pliers into your mouth, put one foot on the chest and pull like their lives depended on it, although the anaesthetics were better then... one whack with a mallet

(just pulling your leg Grom, don't be concerned with the pain, it will only give you more pain instead, just concentrate on the liberated feeling afterwards)

On the Topic, my teeth look disastrous (but thats due to other reasons ) But ive never even had retainers or braces. and Im bloody glad too about that.

Maybe not ... and I wasn't going to get into it but I see now that I must.

In order to "break" my lower wisdom teeth to extractable size, given the confines
in the back of my jaw, my dentist was perched over me, knees on my seat, straddling my waist and had a chisel and hammer to crack the teeth after
having drilled fault lines into them. He had two nurses holding my jaw
with their hands to absorb the blows.

I thought I was going to be killed by an errant blow of the hammer or, worse,
by a slipped chisel impaling the back of my throat.

AND I had to go back a second time to have it done all over again.

Knees on chest with pliers doesn't sound all that bad to me.

@loc I was being a little sarcastic there matee Although I did go to a dentist about 5 years ago, who's surgery resembled that of a "back room abortionist"s. He took one of my teeth out with a local anaesthetic, and I swear to god, when he did it, he put his knee up on the chair so he could get a better angle.

I've never liked dentists - but that was like my worse fears come true. It actually makes the hairs on the back of arms stand up thinking about it.

Needless to say, I went private after that until I moved out of the area Private dentists charge through the roof, but their anaesthetic has got to be tried to be believed

EDIT: @indy - I don't think I'd ever see a dentist again after that!! I thought my experience was bad - but damn I feel lucky now!!

@shadowfire- I've had braces and retainers three times each, over about 10 years from my sadistic orthodontist and his train of whores (hes the only man in an office of 20-30 employees). The spacers are actually the worst part of the whole braces process... just beware if you happen to play a wind instrument (brass especially) your life will be a living hell. I suppose i don't have it the worst. I was in the office once and heard the doctor talking to a kid in the chair next to mine. He was being given instructions to "tighten the screw a half turn every day. When you come back we'll 'activate' your appliance." I never learned what activate meant and I pray everyday I won't have to find out, since most of the work in the office is done by assitances who always seem to have their first day when i'm there...

That's why I don't go to the dentist's anymore. I don't trust the assistants or the doctor himself. I wouldn't mind the assistants if they were drop-dead gorgeous ladies, but they aren't pretty just ugly, and the dentist himself is a total quack.

As I have said before, I remember reading something that stated that bracers did more harm than good. I wonder if it's true... oh right, sorry. Be positive!
