ATi''s and Upgrades

Other than a small setback, im getting my comp upgraded tomorrow, and im replacing my humble P3800 with a celeron 2.4 GHz, my GeForce 2 MX/MX400 with an ATi Radeon 9200.

now my question is, is this a decent card?

Are you upgrading the cpu while using the same mobo? PowerLeap product?

And is that just a plain Jane 9200 or an SE and with which video output capabilities?

I read somewhere that the ATI's are more cpu dependent for a portion of their performance than the nVidia's but that was on the newest X800s.

Noooo!!!

Don't waste your money! Instead, get:-

AMD Athlon FX-53 CPU
ATi Radeon X800T

This is the pinnicle of technology and well worth the investment, and no I am not secretly working for either company

A 9200? *Spits* What have I told you? *Shakes head in despair*. And a 2.4? You should go for a 2.8 minimum; you'll need it!

All depends upon available funds and a willingness to wait. If the SE version, he'd at least have 128 mb or maybe even 256 mb of video ram.

I'm assuming Vi is on a tight budget.

Still I still wonder about the cpu upgrade. Is a 2.4gHz celeron pin compatible with a P3?

Im ripping out the mobo, and replacing nearly everything but the drives and case.

and don't bag me for it. i have limited funds, im not as rich as most of you people, im lucky as it is to get money for this deal, im flat broke and my parents were nice enough to get me money for it. (which i have the parts for, except the mobo. damn fruity supplier)

so back off man. my 800 runs max payne 2 with full ragdoll physics.

EDIT:@TET - i don't want the pinnicle. i'll get that when i leave home. for now i want to -run- the next gen games.

The 9200's a GREAT buy for the money, even the SE version. I play Freelancer on an Athlon XP 2000+ paired with a Radeon 9200 at the full detail levels with no problems at all.

Post Tue Aug 10, 2004 11:40 pm

Fine, but a 9600 Pro would be a far wiser choice (if you can afford it). The 9200 is a little TOO mainstream. And as for being rich, I'm still unemployed damn it! Stupid government! *Walks off grumbling and kicking soft drink can*

@Vi.

So you've spec'd out which 9200 card your getting? RAM Do you have a DVI monitor? Some 9200 cards are made without DVI.

128 mb or maybe even 256 mb of video ram

Ignore the video RAM, its not nearly as important as the actual card speed itself, it's more of a nice commodity than a priority.

BTW, if I scared anyone in my previous post, I apologise

You may want to go for a slower P4 if you can find one than a 2.x Celeron. It will work, but they're really not gaming processors. Better yet, look for one of the new AMD Semprons, which are priced comparably with Celerons but are nearly as fast as a full-out Barton AMD chip in tests.

If you want a 9200, get yourself a 9250. They've just been launched and are DirectX-9 compatible, unlike the 9200s. They're slightly slower (and cheaper!), but should deliver better quality. They're ATI's new "Budget Card".

And lots of RAM is good. Get yourself 512MB and you'll be sitting pretty for any game that PC can handle.

yeah, a 2.26GHz P4 runs around $100. It'll be much faster than a 2.4Ghz "Celery"

umm... got the parts in, but i hit a glitch. the mobo i got (Asus P4S8X), its got onboard sound... but it don't work... any help would be good.

EDIT: I should be nominated for a 'n00b' award. stupid me plugged the mic into the speaker out jack.... oops...

I concur with Wiz's sentiments .

Where do the mods get those pictures anyway? *Shakes head*
