Virtual Memory minimum

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Virtual Memory minimum

After playing games like BF1942, BF Veitnam, and Rise of Nations, which are very taxing on my computer system (1.8 ghz, 256 RAM) I get a warning about my Virtual Memory minimum being too low. It says its fixing the problem, but I always get the message again and again whenever I play. So:

1.) What's Virtual Memory?
2.) How do I fix this so I don't keep getting this message?

2. try deleting stuff you dont use / closing any uneeded processes.

Or better.. increase your page file setting to a larger number.. I have mine on 512 to 1024MB... And don't have any problems so far.

It's when it's kept on default setting then it will give you that error or when the swap file you created is to low. like 128 to 256 or something

Changing your swap file: What windows OS do you use?

Grab yourself another 512MB of RAM, you will see a HUGE improvement in performance of Battlefield Vietnam. That game uses upwards of 600MB of memory when it's loading a map.

As for Virtual Memory, if you're on 2000 or XP:

Right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Performance -> Virtual Memory Change -> Set Initial and Maximum at 1534MB, which should suffice.

The standard procedure is to create a page file that is approximately 1.5x the amount of RAM that you have. Selecting an arbitrary number is not recommended *glares at "TRAPPER" *. Which versions of Windows did you say you had JD?

I have several partitions... In that thing that LaserMeat described, can I give all 5 partitions the same VM settings without damaging my system?

Ignore what I said earlier.

1. Virtual memory is temporary storage used by a computer to run programs that need more memory than it has. The paging file(s) and physical memory, or RAM, comprise virtual memory.
2. In order to increase virtual memory you need to increase one or both of it's components' size (page file(s) and/or RAM). Optimum performance value of the maximum paging file(s) size is 2 to 4 times your RAM size, in your case I would set it to, as proposed earlier, 512MB (initial size) - 1024MB (maximum size).
Note that if you add, say 256MB of RAM, the page file would then be set to 1024MB - 2048MB.

Careful what you wish... You just might get it.

indy, explain something to me, wtf is belabouring?

@ff: A typo, or a slang perhaps...? I think what Indy was trying to say is ''elaborating''.

Okay, I have a USB pocket drive thingy, with 128mbs of storage... Could i plug that in and tell windows to allocate all of it for virtual memory? would it help? Oh, and for those who ask, I'm running WinXP professional.

No, it wouldn't.
To manage/modify your virtual memory, access the System Properties .
Two ways to do this:
- (right click)My Computer -> Properties
- Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System
Now, from System Properties goto Advanced tab, under Performance frame click the Settings button,
then under newly opened Performance Options goto Advanced tab, and under
the Virtual Memory frame click Change . Now click the drive you want your
paging file on, enter 512 as Initial Size value, and 1024 as Maximum Size value.
That's about all. It would be a really good idea to get more RAM, more = better.
