The Rubies are gathered in the docking-bay. They have finished checking their ships and were now discussing the mission. Finalday looks serious as he speaks “You guys, they are really testing us on this one, we got the difficult part of the mission.” He is interrupted by gromit “Who cares how difficult it is, I don’t know about the Diamonds, but the Widows are excellent fighter pilots, as Chetnik said yesterday, even if they are only half as good as we are, you are excellent, we will beat this mission. Just don’t worry about it.”
Finalday looked at gromit appreciatively “OK lets talk tactics, we got 200 turrets to take out in…lets say 7 minutes. Suggestions?
Monkey steps forward “The fastest way would be to use Dragonfly’s on the turrets and shield generator and then a Firestorm or two for the station itself” The rest of the team nodded their approval. Stormtrooper also stepped forward “Who will torp the station? We have to organise that now, otherwise there can be confusion and we don’t have time for that.”
Finalday pondered a minute “Krazy and Arcon can do that, Recusant I want you and Heltak to provide cover for the rest if enemy fighters shows up. All set?” Most head nodded, but Chetnik turns to sw “What did Locutus want?” “Nothing much” she says without looking up. Finalday looks a bit concerned but only says, “Good luck you guys. Let’s go.”
The Tarantulas are also gathered around their ships. They are not too happy about their assignment. Viator is the one who finally asks the question on everyone’s mind “Why did we get the rookie assignment and the rookies got the difficult one? I mean it is a slap in the face.” Locutus looks up from the map he is studying “Apparently they’ve got a huge attitude, they even said that they can be better than us anytime. Maniac decided that they should be brought back to earth, or I guess in this case it’s to Battleship.”
“Hmm” Indy is not really satisfied with the decision “O-K, why were you talking to that girl btw?”
Locutus just smiles sinisterly “Oh that, nothing much, I just delivered a message” He puts away the map.
C’mon you guys, lets roll the rookies are ready as well.”
Soon everyone was in space. The two squadrons each flew in their own formation.
There were three separate communication channels for the mission, A, B and C.
A is common channel for the TCS Reactor, Tarantulas and Rubies.
B is the Tarantula channel and
C is the Ruby channel.
D all frequencies
[{A} Maniac: I expect this mission to be a success, don’t disappoint me. TCS Reactor out.
[{A} Locutus OK everyone, you know what to do, I want complete radio silence until we reach the Sum’nH’hra system
They fly in total silence, soon they reach Sum’nH’hra, the Tarantulas immediately engage the Kilrathi, while the rubies continue to the K’n’Pakh system. When they arrive in the system, it is almost empty.
[{C} Finalday Okay people this is it, Heltak you and Recusant start taking out the remaining Kilrathi, the rest of you get started on the turrets.
They all scatter. Seconds later all hell breaks loose
Heltak started charging at the nearest Kilrathi fighter
[{G} Heltak Eat this insect!
[{G} Dralthi Your line shall end here!
The air is full of radio chatter as the attack progress.
[{C} Stornmtrooper yeeeehaaaa this is fun!
[{G} Vaktoth You’re going to die Human!
[{G} Recusant Die little bug, DIE!
sw is flying toward the station when warnings suddenly starts sounding “Hull breach imminent” She looks at her HUD in surprise, she checked her shield and hull status 10 seconds ago and there was nothing wrong, now the ship is ready to explode!
[{C} sw Ejecting now!
For a moment there is complete silence in the airwaves, nobody can believe what they just heard.
[{C} Finalday sw, what’s wrong?
[{C} Mustang It’s no use, she already ejected.
As sw tumbles through space, she hears Locutus’ words again “In space no-one can hear you scream. It’s only you and the never-ending abyss of death” She has a mixture of feelings, what will happen now? Will a rescue vessel be sent? Will they do their best to find her?
While she is drifting in space, the rest continue their attack on the station, 8 minutes into the attack, all the turrets are destroyed and they can start their attack on the shields and the station itself. Within the designated time the station is destroyed and they can jump back to the Sum’nH’hra system, without sw.
Back in the Sum’nH’hra system
[{A} Finalday Mission accomplished.
[{A} Locutus Lets return to TCS Reactor, any casualties?
[{A} Finalday sw had to eject, I don’t think she is dead, but we couldn’t help her.
[{A} Locutus Well I can’t do anything either, lets return, Maniac can decide what to do.
[{A} Finalday But...but...
[{A} Locutus I said we return, lets go
[{A} Finalday Yes sir
[{C} Krazy sir we can’t just leave her
[{C} Finalday I know Krazy, but we can’t disobey orders, I’ll do my best to organise something as soon as we get back
When they arrive back at the TCS Reactor, they are allowed to dock. The Tarantulas do their report and are dismissed. The Rubies however has to stay.
Maniac walks up and down in front of them, looking at the same time angry and...satisfied? “Well, you have succeeded in your first mission, I have to congratulate you on that. I cannot however congratulate you for losing one of your squadron members so soon. It means on of two things, either you were too sloppy in you back-up of she was just a terrible pilot.
Finalday jumps to attention, “With all due respect Sir, she is an excellent fighter”. Maniac looks at him “Was a good fighter”
The Rubies are shocked by this statement. Finalday speaks again “You mean no-one is going to look for her?”
Maniac sighs theatrically “We all know that there is no chance to find her now. An honorary service will be held for her later. Now go get cleaned up, dismissed”
Really. OK.
