Originally sausages known either as frankfurters or wieners depending upon the exact recipe of its making which also seem to coincide with the cities of Frankfurt and Wien, these sausages, after having become homologated into modern American industrially produced sausages consisting of meat and meat by-products, took on the nickname of "hot dog" and now are sold as such.
We now contradistinguish hot dogs from other sausages so that when one buys and eats a "sausage" one is eating something made of meat and meat by-products made in accordance with formulae from a by-gone era. Whereas hot dogs represent a modern and industrially interpretive facsimile of what a sausage in Frankfurt of Wien used to be ... or still may be, just not here in the US.
