notable space sims

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

notable space sims

this is just a checklist for me to remember what i should get. this means the more notable space sims.

we've got SL, FL, freespace? can anyone name all the versions for me?

and whats eve? is it played offline like SL? and there's elite. can i have all the version names for that too? whats this 'the reckoning' thing? its an expansion to one of these i believe.

i'm just looking for a brief review on these games, and a list of their expansions/sequels/prequels. and if there are any i've missed, please name them.

btw this includes space strategy like homeworld. (i've played hw and hw2 - both a must get)

and also, if any of them are still relatively 'new'.

muchos thanks.

wing commander

Post Thu Jun 24, 2004 8:29 am

ok from the top

Elite
Wing Commander
WC2 + SO1/SO2
WC: Armada (strategy and a very good one)
WC: Privateer
WC3
WC4
Privateer 2: The Darkening (not WC at all)
WC: Prophecy + Secret Ops
Freespace + Silent Threat
Freespace 2
X-Beyond the Frontier + X-Tension (geddit?)
X2-The Threat

you could try Tachyon the Fridge (Fringe) but it's not very satisfactory, certainly not as good as most of the above.

Eve is entirely online, you pay for your connection and the server access and for the game itself, so it gets expensive, and it isnt really that good unless you give it like 6 months of regular play of several hours a day.

there are others but none that are really any good. You might like to try some of the Trek ones but really Trek is a different kettle of fish. ST:Armada wasn't bad though for an RTS.

I'm sure I've missed some out but the kitten is crawling all around my neck and head making typing a rather painful experience.

Privateer had an expansion pack, called Righteous Fire. I thought it was good.

I thought Tachyon was pretty enjoyable. But it's definately not as good as WC.

You can't forget about the Star Wars X-Wing Series. Those were all pretty good!

If you have the patience to spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a minimum of a month, before actually mastering the controls or realising the depth of a game...I couldn't recommend ELITE enough.

Its a whopper, and still the best in its category for depth and strategy...but nowadays with the onslaught of high-end processors and graphics cards, I can guarantee you will be disappointed on first play. But I can't recommend it enough.

Its the daddy

bah, curses, forgot all about Tie v X-Wing, Tie Fighter and the like. thx Hole!

Tachyon the fringe wasn't that bad. Bruce Cambels voice in it made it more interesting. Especially if you used the cheat codes. He had prearanged voice overs just for that. Hilarious.

I know of FL and SL, X2 (which i didnt buy) I have EVE and its a great game but it takes an acquired taste its not really interesting for alot of people, you have to kind of grow to like it. Its really good but some people just dont find it appealing and thats fine. I have the entire Homeworld series and love it (best space RTS imo) and thats all I can really think of involving space sims.

I liked EVE for the short while I played it, but i missed the extra free month they gave me at xmas....and i just plain refused to pay for it after not getting enough out of it (truthfully i didn't have the time to invest at that point in time). However, if they made it a fiver a month i would be tempted to go back to it.

I must admit, i don't like the way of the "pay to play" ideas are coming in, especially when its 15 quid a throw per month - its just milking you for too much (unless you earn so much that you don't care of course!).

I was much the same Chips, I just wasn't playing it enough to justify the cost, which is a shame because it is a very beautiful and complex game and q different from most other online experineces, prob because the pay aspect keeps most of the riff-raff out.
