New long range sweeping stun guns!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

New long range sweeping stun guns!

I just read this in the New Scientist magazine.
This is the sort of technology that really scares me. At the moment the smallest of these weapons is so big it looks like a weapon from Terminator (take a look here), but as the technology is refined and miniaturized, it'll be easier to conceal and use. I can already picture people using it to rob banks. These days the staff are relatively safe behind reinforced glass, but with the airholes a robber could fire the ionised gas through the airholes and electrocute someone inside. Also alarming is the fact that the weaponry has not undergone independent testing, to me it sounds like it's been rushed out for military use in places like Iraq.

This looks like a great invention. The police need a "captain Kirk" gun so they can go back to being able to shoot people who run away from them.
As far as criminals go, I'd rather be hit with ionized gas than a bullet any day. This kind of gun probably won't increase crime, but I can see criminals using them so they can get lighter prison sentences. Their lawyers will say, "Rocko didn't want to hurt anyone."

Great stuff for taking hostages. Anyway, I would prefer furthering the tevelopment of this weapon and see it replace the present weaponry - wars would be a game. Though, on the other hand, people will still like killing, so it's not likely to happen. but it would indeed be a great gun for cops.

I'd say it's a good idea for cops as long as they have a real gun for backup. Otherwise what inducement would anyone have to not run or kill or whatever? Stop or I'll knock you out if I survive to get in range?

it may be a good idea when they minimize the to the size of a hand gun because i don't see an undercover cop getting into a drug house with that thing
*acts like undercover cop with the stun rifle* oh this its just my cell phone

in one of the james bond things he was holding his hp and shocked someone with it.

maybe its a good idea. feasible. but i don't know. my brain is a little twisted today.

@kimk: not yours only
Of course, this gun has to and will become smaller in the future (just think of computers). Then it'll be of real use.

Ya and if they make cheap little ones, the kids could start their own guilds and have stun wars. I probably won't be in any protests after it comes out.

it takes all the fun out of water cannons and plastic bullets!

did you know you can buy tasers on the inter-web even though in most countries they're restricted items?

bah, they should just strip a few meters of protective cover off of a cable that is about 12 meters long, then just plug it in and swing it round there heads whilst approaching the crowd.

Cost = 3 quid max
Shock value = Main ly harsh
Crowd stunning potential = Flay the wires out to make a really nice "cat'o'9 tails' effect at the end so that it won't stop on one person, and can shock many.

Reqiures 1 x 240V supply and a rubber glove/wellies

See - they shoulda had me on the development team. I woulda been wading into those rioting people, dealing out some "AC" to the minions of the nasties!

Meh, it probably a good thing. Still, I wonder how long it will take until someone markets it to women as a measure to stop "unwanted advances" .

They need to do serious testing. The taser has problems. In Gwinnett county, Ga, there have been a few deaths related to the use of the Taser. In that county, police can no longer use them till an investigation is over. If people have heart or other medical problems, there are liabilities involved.

Hopefully there will have been some good tests before this thing is small enough to really be used, and I garuntee that no cop will leave his 9mm(s) home counting on his stun gun to save him.(are cops in England still not allowed to pack heat?) It will probably never be 100% safe, because even if the gun doesn't do any harm, you can get hurt pretty bad when you fall down in a heap. As far as danger to people with heart trouble, I don't hear very often of cops having to face down crooks with pace makers. I do hear of grannys robbing banks but in all the instances I've heard of they give up easy.
