"sounds" to me like you've been fiddling again, AoD, but never mind eh, it's not a crisis.

quickest solution, without going into long explanations of what you've done. Uninstall the Creative driver suite and before rebooting, remove the device from devoce manager. Have your SB install cd ready for re-installation. Reboot and let XP pick up the device and choose the driver form the cd itself, don't re-install the Creative.

these type of conflicts are not uncommon since Xp has its own drivers for s/cards and of course the manuf supplies one with the card too. Buggering about often causes conflict between these two sets of drivers. However there can be version conflicts too. Have you recently done an update from MS? there are usually updated MS drivers for h/ware in the update lists, when I had an Nvidia some months ago, the up[dated MS drivers were forever throwing the Nvidia ones out.

Thanks Taw (why "Big Monkey"?), it turns out that
XP deleted the SB drivers like i thought.
i bought the card off my friend for a chunk of bread
and so it had no disk, wires, front panel and box

i DID however find the driver that you get on the disk
on google, and a quick 4 hour 377Mb dl later
it all works fine, then XP decides to delete it AGAIN!
(must... resist... Unix!) spent three hours persuading
XP that the drivers are already installed, Voila sound works!

BUT now the Creative controll panel dont work SO i dont
have me nice 4 channel Audio. C*rap. i just have to spend
a further three hours persuading XP that the controll panel
is installed too. C*rap. i'll report back when it WORKS.

377mb giveover, the SB driver should be no more than a few mb, about 16 at most. tell me what the card is (CT model number, should be on it somewhere) and I'll find the right driver for you.

SB Live!'s are cheap as chips AoD. You won't get much for it. And I agree with Taw; you have been a bad boy haven't you? Stop messing with your PC! We won't always be around to fix it you know .

here's the correct driver don't bother with the disc detector it's just more bundled rubbish. if you d'load the Unipack it's about 28mb, if you just do the driver it's about 6mb summat like that.

btw Esq & SW I haven't forgotten your resquests, I still can't ftp or even e-mail now, ISP got d.o.s.'d and theyre still trying to fix it (amateurs) so I'm stuck with fonky hotmail and it's 1mb att limit sorry.

As soon as its fixed I'll upload the stuff for both of you so you can get it but let me know when you've d-d it so i can clear it down.

Taw - Thanks for letting me know. I'm never sure how many of my emails you get, as you keep saying that the medication is affecting your memory .

AoD - I just like teasing you . Still, what other conclusion can I draw? Skill with PCs is commesurate with experience, and you are still a young'un. Besides, who else could have trashed your PC? You don't let the family use it do you *gasp* ?

actually the medication isn't affecting my memory as much now, I've got used to it. however NTL are still ballsing up my online storage and email which is now starting to be a real problem after a week.
