Ray Charles Died Aged 73

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

/picks Ed up.

if this TLR interweb thing had been going pre '96, or if meh fayther had lived a few years longer, you could have spoken to the Jazzman himself about it. Unf. because I was never interested my knowledge is very limited and scrappy.

during Ray C's heroin addiction phase when it was difficult for him to find work, me fayther was one of the few people who would book him, when even Ronnie Scott (me old mans arch-rival back in the 60s) turned him away. Similarly, me dad booked Jerry Lee Lewis to appear in Burnley when no-one else would touch him after he eloped with his underage cousin (ok JLL isn't jazz but me dad booked anyone if they were good enough, he was a total muso)

My favorite Ray Charles moment is in the Movie "The Blues Brothers" where he runs Ray's Music Exchange in Calumet City, Illinois.

See if you can follow this logic

God is love
Love is blind
Ray Charles is blind
Therefore Ray Charles is God

Well, I've never erm... actually heard of him, per se , but I'm sure it's a great loss for the world.

DUCK!

I even like Ray's numbers when he almost went "Mantovani." The thing with him is that the soul he put into his work was always present. It almost was as if because he was blind he was able to focus on his art that much more intensely.

And, as I understand it, he was a very nice guy.

i don't actually remember, I was about 5 or 6 when I met him. There's a picture somewhere of me sitting on his knee, if I can ever find it I'll let you have a copy.

I feel like such a philistine, I didn't even know the difference between Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder

@Rec,

It is more a sign of your age.... or lack of it, than anything else.

Ray pre-date Stevie by quite a bit as you well may imagine. Don't even know that
he'd appeal to you. He's what we'd call a golden oldie.

rec - its never too late to learn my friend seriously, pick up a greatest hits or something and check it out...you don't know what you're missing!

@taw - you and me have got to have a chat about your dad at some point. Sounds as if I should know his name...or at least his club's name....was he part of the northern soul movement par chance?

Post Fri Jun 11, 2004 6:30 pm

Rec - Even I've heard of him, and I don't even listen to music. *Rubs it in*

grom, it was Club64 in Bolton, the shell of it was still there a few years ago )got burnt down in the early 70s) wasnt Northern Soul ever afaik, me fayther had another club near Burnley but I can't remember what that was called. if itmeans anything to you, my dad's jazz combo was called "Master Sound Sytem" and me dad played d/bass, some of the blokes are still pro-musicians, others like me fayther gave up for various reasons.

..the Devil will find work for idle hands to do; i stole and I lied, and why? because you asked me to..
