If youo're really interested in X2, I'd suggest going to Egosoft forums and playing XBTF beforehand. Me, I like the game, the graphics, etc., but it's more about trading than fighting, so I prefer space FPS.

I played X BTF and I liked it. My only gripe was how long it took to get a little cash at the start of the game. It seems like it took me a week to get enough money to buy a space station. It was a lot more fun to rev up my Hex editor and give myself a ton of money so I could upgrade my ship over and over. Eventually I reached a deadend because the amount of money needed for an upgrade was almost equal to the maximum amount of money you could have (a long integer data type has a max value of around 2 billion). So I had to save and hack just to get one upgrade, but by then I could kick the crap out of the Xenon ships pretty good.

I was interested in X2 until it came out and some sites that I have come to trust to give fair reviews said it stunk, so I didn't bother buying it.
