Tech help needed

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Tech help needed

Yes well, I've been complaining about it long enough, and now it's time for me to swallow my pride and humbly ask for assistance.

I have a Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X, and I suspect it's the main culprit here. My computer can no longer run any 3D games with any form of stability. Freelancer, the last game it ran without problems now crashes. I've tried updating drivers video drivers and going back to old ones, I've tried driver cleaner, tried updating sound card and nothing has worked, I have also scanned for viruses and spyware. The textures in the game always disappear when it's about to crash, that's the tell-tale sign. Although with NWN it just flat out crashes with no warning. Is there any solution apart from buying a new card since I'm not financially capable enough to buy a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am just a worthless liar,
I am just an imbecile,
I will only complicate you,
Trust in me and fall as well.

Are you getting any strange problems when you're not playing games, ghosted windows, temporary freezing, anything remotely strange? It certainly does sound like a shagged card to me though.

Hmm, it could be a heat issue. How are the GPU/CPU fans doing? Are they free of dust and have a decent RPM rate?

Uh, OS is XP. The system temp is about 25 degrees cel. and the CPU is at about 49 degrees cel., the CPU fan is running at roughly 3515 RPM.

That should be fine. What about the graphics card? I'm pretty sure that it has a fan. Is the GPU fan running smoothly?

surely you can take the card back and swap it? you must try a different card to determine if it is (as it prob is) a sh*t card. You might find that if it is an 8X board, that the card not being 8x is causing problems. actually thats a 2x/4x card iirc, I certainly would be loth to use it on a newish board. also its prob some oem card, most nVidias are, and you can't rely on quality (one of the reasons I use ATi)

I thought that it could be an AGP 2x/4x problem Taw, but he hasn't stated that anything has changed, ie. he hasn't installed a new card etc, so if it worked before... Still, it is possible.

I swapped my card with my brother's to see what happened, which is a Radeon 9200, and nothing has crashed. So I guess it's definitely the video card, oh and yeah, the GPU is running smoothly.

Yep, sounds like your card is going downhill. It happens. Still, ds some extensive testing in another PC, just to make sure that it really IS the card, and not the PCI slot or something else.
