Partitioning

Okay, I've been trying to partition my hard disk. I've tried to do it with Windows XP help (which is useless - the things they say are there aren't! ) How do I do it? Is there any recommended program?

you should have done before you set Windows up. it's difficult to partition when you already have a partition (which is using all the avail space btw)

however all is not lost! if you get your hands on PartitionMagic or similar s'ware, you can partition from within Windows.

Can't you use Partition Commander to do a partition on a occupyed disk? I am trying to remember, but I think I did it one time on win 98, but thi was a few years ago. Not sure but, I was experimenting a bit.

is it kinda dangerous to partition a disk after having stuff installed on it?

you're making me nervous! hahaha

would it be better to leave it?

Post Sat Jun 05, 2004 6:16 am

at this stage in your computer experience, you'd be best leaving it. if you really want to have a go, back up everything you need first, in case you terminate your existing partition.

@Fd,

Partition commander works too but, in all honesty, Partition Magic is THE s'ware for this when you want to do it AFTER the HDD has been setup with an OS. It is much easier to use. PM is an all in one tool Commander comes in smaller chunks and you have to shell out for each one. Ultimately can cost more, clunkier to use.

Duly noted. But as the other was experimenting, it utimatly led me to getting a second hard drive and saving my files there rather than in a partition. That way, they would be safer if the main drive failed.

i recomend a full back-up if your going to mess with your HDD if you do something wrong you could accidently wipe your disk clean and lose everything!

Just format the damn thing! Then partition it.
