Windows Problem

Ok guys, I have a problem with windows again, its nothing anyone can fix I believe, see I tried to update my video drivers and got me with a long series of problems, which currently has me stuck in 4 bit, 640x480 graphics mode. It has to do with my video card, reinstalling it or its drivers yields the same result, I return to this same setting and am unable to change it. Anyhow, I do have a plead for any help regarding removing my files from my computer. I have over 300 text documents and several picture folder and tons of downloads and stuff, the mass of which was collected over 2-3 years of surfing.Unfortunately, the only way to fix my problem is to throw my computer out the ****ing window. Or restore it. Now.... my question is, how do i get all those precious files and picture and texts off my computer. My CD burner doesnt work thanks to CDcreator 4 (**** roxio) so that closed my very last option of getting everything out before its too late. I did try to fix the roxio problem as everyone told me to find a winxp patch for it, oh and the great news is that there is none. So... any suggestions?

If you want to save any files, get a friend's hard drive, or take yours to a friends, and stick it in the/their computer, do a hard drive to hard drive transfer and get him to hold on to your files for you.

Edit: I assume that's what you wanted to know, I'm not good at understanding possible sarcasm over the net.

An early idea. Have you been to windows update? I had similar problems with an old computer. The drivers would not update and I had only 16 colors. After going to update and finding the driver on it, I'm up to 32bit color now, and the moitor is also old. Try this first.

second, glean through all you have and see what is worth keeping and what is not. Iomega has a Zip drive for around $79 and they hold 100mb each. This is enough to save text and some other downloads. Or download a trial writer to copy the files fix everything and then put them back. An option? Try the first idea before all, as it's easyer.

Good luck no mater what you chose.

So you don't want any help fixing your display problems? Fair enough.

Well, you could do what Fisch said (probably the best option), or you could install a second HDD and backup to that, or you could download a trial copy of Nero, and use that to burn your files to CDs... there are many options. How many MBs (or GBs) do you need backed up?

Well here let me get into more detail. I have a GeForce 4, and I havent updated it in about a year . So I went on Nvidia.com ( i needed to get new drivers cause I need them to run Rise of Nations: Thrones And Patriots) anyway, I got the latest and installed. Then my computer needed to restart and so it did, 3 times actually, on its own. Then....... I get back in and im stuck at 640x480 with 4bit 16 colors. The driver does not install successfully. I went to Device Manager and tried to uninstall and have it redetect my card. Which to my surprise actually corrects it back to high color again. Unfortunately at that point, I can change resolution. So it redetects the card and once its redected it restarts and back to 4bit 16 color mode. I was on the phone with microsoft for a good 2 hours and didnt come out with anything.

I have this same problem sometimes with a GeForce 4 MX420 64mb that's in my server, whenever I put a new o/s in or make a major hardware change. It's a retail Creative one, and will not behave if I use an Nvidia refernece driver or the latest Detonator all-in-one.

it will only install properly if I use the driver supplied by Creative with the card, then I can update the driver from Creative's support site, then I can apply a Detonator driver and it works fine.

another thing, other than a faulty card, is that your monitor refresh rate might be too low to display certain resolutions.

..how about getting me off these antibiotics..

Hmm, you could have the wrong drivers, or maybe the registry has been corrupted. Whic version of DirectX do you have? You should try reinstalling it before you do anything. In any case, have you tried "System Restore"? If you've tried it, or have disabled it, try downloading a program called "Driver Cleaner". Uninstall the drivers from "Add/Remove Programs" (if they are listed), and then remove the card from the "Device Manager". After that, unistall and run "Driver Cleaner" to remove all old files, and then restart the machine. Then try reinstalling some working drivers to make sure that Windows is working correctly, and then report back .

Cant find "Driver Cleaner" anywhere, but im running on "Default Monitor" 800x600 High Color. I tried reinstalling drivers several times but there seems to be a file it wont copy. Corrupt maybe? I whipped out the video card's driver CD and that wont go past the same file either. Ill provide the name of the file in a later edit maybe.

Eh? Do you mean "does it work?", or "why would driver cleaner allow it to work?" Final?

Post Tue Jun 01, 2004 3:47 pm

A little of both, as in which solution proved to work. Hey you Uni guys had your turn, now its my turn to learn again.

Fair enough Final. Do you want me to go into detail as to exactly why using "Driver Cleaner" is a good idea, or have you learnt enough for today .
