DSL vs. Cable

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Taw, at work, an apartment community, there are 145 apartments plus office and clubhouse. When a lot are on the cable, it really bogs down. 1 line feeds the whole community. I did a download of 30mb and it took 19 minuets to do.

Well, we don't have cable all the way over here in little ol' NZ. Mostly because the main telephone company Telecom has a monopoly over all of the phone lines and refuses to take steps to allow us to have faster internet connections. Anyway, I have DSL and it's great, it's never died on me except for the times the ISP had server troubles because Telecom was doing some crazy stuff and upgrading. So yeah, I recommend DSL.

I am just a worthless liar,
I am just an imbecile,
I will only complicate you,
Trust in me and fall as well.

My server is connected to a dual WAN gateway. For a while I had ADSL on one WAN connection, cable on the other. Cable REALLY stunk next to the ADSL. Basically it's as Stinger and others say, it is not reliable. Especially during the evening when more people on cable were surfing and more players on my server, my cable connection would have terrible lag problems.

If you are just surfing, possibly you'll never notice latency and bandwidth issues one cannot have with a game server. But in my area the cost between the two is comperable. This is why my server now has two ADSL connections.

People get bandwidth caps on downloads???? What the heck is that about?

24/7 unlimited uncapped dsl..........and i thought every broadband connection was the same - so why (if cable do that) go for it? Stick with what is good for you

@Growserpaul - there always be someone faster.

I've been using cable for something in the area of 7-8 years, I rarely have problems with it. Matter of fact, my last problem was the modem crapping out after 7 years of continuous use. I get awesome download speeds - I've topped an average of 650kb/sec in peak hours - of course I live in an apartment that is 50% seniors.

Of course, it really varies. Many people I have spoken with have had similar experiences with their ADSL, and terrible problems with the cable ISP. We use a commercial DSL at work, and it goes down an average of three times per week for hours at a time - not good.
