DSL vs. Cable

DSL vs. Cable

I've decided to finally upgrade - my 33.6kBps modem is going in the bin. You may well laugh but it's true. i'm going to move up to cable/dsl

which is better? i can pay exactly the same for cable as i can for dsl on the plan i'm going for - 500 MB of downloads per month. it's 40 aussie bucks a month (so about 15 pounds or 20 US bucks)

Cable can be faster at times than DSL but DSL is sustained bandwidth. That's the difference.

I've got DSL. I love it. I do wish that DSL was cheaper so that EVERYONE could have it.

You're going to crack that 500mb limit on about the 3rd week of every month, i'd at least go for a gigabyte capping.

it's the same plan - downloads up to 500MB. same cost. only difference is cable or DSL. 40 bucks a month, 15 cents per meg after limit

Shut up, Neo .

The best plans are those that drop you down to 64k if you exceed your limit. That way, there are no excess charges, and you can still check you email etc, until your limit is reset.

As for DSL vs. Cable, it depends upon what you want it for. Downloading? Email? Other?

I my 1mb cable. Always choose cable over DSL, 'tis the fibre-optics that make the diff.

oh i'm probably going to use the cable/dsl connection for computer customization - i'm into icon creation and visual styles for windows. so quite a bit of uploading and downloading of 8-20 meg files really. i've just had enough of this cruddy modem which dies every 2nd week.

and when i do get a decent connection, i'm going to start playing MP Freelancer as well.

taw seems to be the go-to man here when it comes to technology and computers okay, so it seems cable is the way to go. that way, i'll get them to put in cable tv at the same time - goodbye free to air tv!

Hmm...so you're saying that if two people...one with DSL and one with Cable start to download the exact same large file the cable guy will download faster???

Um, real world experience here...that is false . I used to have cable and DSL at the same time for an entire moth and timed identical downloads....DSL won the speed test 100 out of 100 times.

But hey, don't believe me...what do I know?


DSL service is inherently more secure than using a cable modem because DSL provides a dedicated connection over your existing telephone line. A cable modem is more susceptible to hackers since it operates on a shared system, much like an old-fashioned party line.


Hmm, now if no one is cocenred about that, then cable is your choice.


Two factors determine just how fast the Internet will seem to the average home user. The first factor is the connection between the subscriber's home computer and the ISP. But the second factor, the one that's frequently overlooked, is the connection between the ISP and the rest of the Net.


Interesting here too. Makes you think "all thing considered" here huh?

I have used cable for about 6 months now and have had no problem. It fits my uses well enough.

Edit: DSL doesn't reach me here.

It depends on what the cable guy can afford. I can only think of one fairly wealthy cable guy, and that's Larry. (Larry the Cable Guy, Comedian)

Where I am, bandwidth is cheaper on cable than on ADSL. If I had cable TV, I would go with cable internet access, as I don't I use the cheapest ADSL service available to me.

i have cable. the downloading speed is awesome...true teh bandwidth is more flat with DSL. But hell, when you can DL a 650mb file in about 10 min, cable is the way to go!!!!!!!!

all I'm saying is that dsl can be shared with up to 50 other subscribers whereas with cable its 20. At busy times you can really notice the diff. My 1meg domestic cable is generally much faster in practice than my works 2meg dsl, purely due to contention ration.
