Without further ado: My review!
Let me first state that I haven't played any of the previous games and I also didn't play Deus Ex 2. So I don't know anything about the gameplay and the graphics engine.
What are today's game publishers thinking? Since when is a ordinary two level demo almost half a Gigabyte in size? On the other hand: praise our engineers for inventing ADSL! After downloading the demo I let it rest on my computer because I was just to busy to install it
After a short install I immediatly picked my favourite settings (1024x768 but with a good detail level) and clicked the "New Game" button. We get to see a little briefing (more like a page out of a journal). You can check out your mission objectives, your gear and what you've previously looted.
About the goals. From what I've seen there are a few basic goals with alot of variation. These are the basic goals:
- Find a way to steal this special item
-Subgoal to complete main goal.
-Subgoal to complete main goal.
- Steal xx% of loot (depends on chosen difficulty)
- Steal x special items (also depends on chosen difficulty)
- Don't kill any non-combatants.
Back to the game. No tutorial? We get to play the first mission right away? No!
The first mission (a real mission) is also your tutorial. We get to learn how to sneak, kill and loot and to pick locks.
You can compare the sneaking part with Splinter Cell: you have the possession (sp?) of a mysterious eye which tells you wether you're blended it with the shadows or if even a nearly blind man can see you. When you attack someone, a stab from behind is an instant kill.
Looting items is as easy as it gets. You just pick them up
What exactly the purpose is isn't really clear to me yet. Maybe you can sell them later on in the game for better gear.
You gear. The following stuff is seen in the demo:
- a dagger
- a blackjack (some sort of a small maul)
- water arrows to put out fires, which surrounds you with darkness
- Noisemakers (arrows that make noise and lure guards away)
- Arrows to hurt someone
- Flashbangs (the medieval version?)
- Health potion.
The thing you must do is not to get noticed or to alert anyone. If so, they are alot harder to kill and they can hurt you.
I'm not really impressed with the Deus Ex 2 engine. The textures aren't that detailed as in the newest good games there are out there. The most inportant thing in a stealth game is the way they display light and dark. To be quite hones, I've seen better. The dynamic lighting (if that's how they call it) already was much better in Splinter Cell 1. That's the overall feeling I getwhen playing this game. It's like Splinter Cell going on a medieval tour but SC has these little things that make it better.
My opinion: this is a game for those who loved the previous two Thief games, otherwise you can better buy Splinter Cell to take your first steps in the Stealth genre.
