Thankfully they had this sucker ghosted on my ISP's file network. Had it down the line in 15 minutes (kisses cable modem)
I played both Thief 1 and 2, this one is quite different. Better? Well that's going to depend on what you expect. A lot of people are going to come to this game wanting to hate it, like they hate Deus Ex 2. The engine is almost a dead replica of Deus Ex 2 but it does run a LOT better in Thief. The dynamic lighting does make things much more atmospheric than any of the Dark engines were ever capable of doing.
The level design seems to follow a similar pattern to the original Thief games, you basically have to do a bit of investigative work before you can jump in and start stealing things. Taking a frontal assault actually seems more lethal in this game, which is good to see. I was a bit worried they were going to turn Garrett into a tank to make it more "accessible" for our console brethren. But rest assured dear reader; if you get caught sneaking around the best course of action is to run your ass off. The levels themselves are quite small, akin to DX2 any large map is split into separate loading zones. This is actually my number one gripe, it's not THAT bad but in the very large levels this is going to get moderately annoying.
There are once again a number of ways of going about things, you can find multiple entrances and paths, avoid, distract, knock-out or kill guards, scour the place clean or just do enough to complete your objectives. The story is told in much the same way, cut scene's, reading pieces of parchment, over hearing conversations and Garrett’s own inner monologue.
Third Person vs. First Person? I personally enjoyed using both, I was constantly skipping back and forth between the two. Sometimes the more beneficial view is first person and sometimes when I would really need some peripheral vision I’d slip into third person.
All in all I think it looks like a worthy successor but the modified Unreal engine is by far it's biggest letdown. It's very atmospheric looking but it's seriously clunky and claustrophobic. I think I’ll be making a purchase of this game though. I've always been a huge fan of the Thief series and although I don't think this one will top Thief 2 it will certainly revive that old feeling.
