Rare computer problem has me stumped - it''s in the shop but

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

You got out good then. Did they test the output of voltage and if they did, what was the reading. As you had said that the CD drive lights came on, there must have been some voltage getting through. The info will be good for future problems to check on.

Well that was a strange one, usually when a PSU goes they let go completely. I've never had one halfway die like that.

Post Wed May 26, 2004 8:13 pm

Interesting. I have only had a PSU "half die" on me once, and in that case, it turned out that the reason that th PC kept powering down at random intervals was not only because the PSU was a goner, but also because the PSU had fried the power rails on the MB at the same time as it started going downhill. Watch out for cheap PSUs people.

Rob, this is the second time you've posted recently with problems with electrics. Is there an issue with your mains? Do you have surge-protection/ups? not that that would protect you from a bad psu, but maybe dirty power toasted your psu?

Hmm, you have a point Taw. Maybe he has frequent "brown outs" or something of that nature.

Taw,

2 different machines in two different locales, 25 miles away from each other. Common denominators - Both Asus boards and both built by the same comp shop. Other than that, nothing similar except owners had similar DNA.

Post Thu May 27, 2004 2:12 am

and the fact the same shop built them...

Post Thu May 27, 2004 2:22 am

sorry i assumed (wrongly) that they were all yours.

however same vendor and same make of mobo would tend to put me off

a/ the shop

&/or

b/Asus

which have been a real prob to me over the last few months.

Post Thu May 27, 2004 1:54 pm

Well, technically speaking it wasn't the board this time around. I'm still not happy it happened but let's be sure of the facts before we start hammering Asus mobos to death here. Believe me I was stoked to jump on that bandwagon.

Post Thu May 27, 2004 4:25 pm

sorry i checked both my A+ hardware and software books this is not covered anywhere in them i've never had a/heard of "mobo" so i can't bash them
(this is for everyone) also never use a computer with out a surge protector thats a great way to BBQ your system and yourself 'course as i type this my house is getting pounded by a thunder storm, i'm pushing my luck big time

Like Gigabyte, I feel that ASUS are beginning to go down hill slightly. I just think that ASUS boards are beginning to offer less and less as time goes on, but hopefully they'll get better.

Well, we all know wolfy telepathically damaged Stinger's computer, because he's sick of his own one playing up !

I got a problem too. I got an OLD Ibm (just a P1 chipset). One day, I go to turn it on...two beeps...1962 Boot sequence error

2 Years of trying everything but teaching it to "fly" has brought me nothing but sore fingers.

Can anyone help me?

@Spectra: I think the fact that you even have P1 is the problem. Time to join the 21st century. I think you need to retire that thing.
