bah, dont get alienware, they may run good, but you'll be regretting it because of how ugly ur desktop will be after getting one. id prefer to buy separate parts yourself (while it may be a bit more) its better though

The thing is, get the full version of windows blinds and you can make any type of desk top you want without buying a computer. Base you computer choice on its ability, not the desk top. A custom can have any shell on the outside and anything you want inside. Ask taw. Performace listed at more than 1000% , I believe is hype.

If so...it still looks sweet ...all that shiny black . To tell you the truth though, the most important thing is that it has good performance, I dont care if its butt ugly

When Taw or Esq are back around, they can give better feedback on preformance types and the best for the buck. So far alien is aimed at the outside design seekers. Keyboard is nice though.

Alienware are nice computers, you just have to pay a arm and a leg for their desktop computers to get the upper end stuff. I personally think that with the same amount of money you could build a computer yourself with components that are even better. You would probably even have enough money to buy a nice case with a cooling system and a sweet keyboard.

While were on the topic though, the one thing i will give it to alienware is on their laptops. Those things are more powerful than most of the desktop pc's that are floating around. They are made for the mobile gamer with huge power inside of them. Those are the one thing that we can't "build" ourselves just because of the components and of the amount of space to cram it all in.

Alienware, eh? They are supposed to perform quite well, but they are very expensive, and are not as good as a PC you build yourself. You know, we had a topic about this less than two weeks ago... Anyway, I'd wait until their video card parallel bus (ALX I think it's called) is available. Then you can buy TWO Radeon X800's and put both of them in the Alienware PC and get double the performance (for double the price of course ).

Matt - The laptops have superior performance, but they can get bloody hot, mainly because the chassis acts as a big heatsink. They are also heavy and thus, not terribly mobile, and are still nowhere near as fast a desktop PC.

Alienware is the "largest" specialty gaming PC manufacturer so they are the most affordable in this group of specialty makers. They do not overclock components (they leave it up to you) and generally use the "best" available parts for mobos, procs, video cards, RAM and HDDs. Of course, the pricing will dictate how "best" those bests are.

Because they don't fiddle with the clock speeds, you get both the parts manufacturer's warranty and Alienware's on the machines.

If you can afford them, Alienwares are pretty good.

Just to keep things in perspective, though, if you have the cash, you also need to check out Falcon Northwest and Voodoo.

@leonhart, make sure you're buying it because its better than any other machine that you can afford and NOT because its aesthetically pleasing. If its a funky desktop you want, spend a little time designing a new theme. And if you can't be bothered, pay me to do it

Seriously though, I've been duped in the past because I've bought something that looks better than it works. You'll get a bigger buzz in the long run from having a superb machine that you built and customised yourself.

they are actually good machines, albeit grossly overpriced. I've no idea what the service standard is on them.

If you're interested because of the case design, well it seems an expensive way to get a nice case. Myself I don't give a flying f*** what they're in as long as it's easy to work on and cools well and there's plenty of room in the thing for fans and extra HDs etc. My current case is just a metal box by comparison but has great airflow and lots of room.

To spend that kind of money because of a desktop design or utulity is daft to me - there are so many desktop customisation utils out there.

Besides if you build your own you'll learn more and not have to keep asking "how do I..?"

pre-builts are for the moms and dads, which is ok if you don't want to ever open the thing up and want to scream abuse down the phone at some poor helpdesk guy who's doing his best to try to figure out what the hell you're on about.. and building it yourself really isn't that hard. 1/2 a day out of your life, a day at most.

Everything I've heard about computers from companies like Alienware and Falcon Northwest and Voodoo tell me that these are excellent computers. I believe the reason that Alienware charges so much for their computers is becaus they're not a very big computer company like Dell or Compaq, so they can charge more. It's also the service and warranty you're paying for.

I always look at those three, especially, as kind of like the custom houses that take a car from the factory and then add more oomph to them. Like AMG does to Mercedes, etc. You pay more for the oomph and sometimes, not all that much more oomph but, at least, you have professionals doing it for you... if you can afford to pay through the nose, that is.
