I am one of those filthy Alaskans (born and raised) up here and both my mother and father were dog mushers.

I was raised around 60 dogs in my early childhood until I was 6 years old, but I still remember how exciting the races were. The dogs used ranged from full wolfs, to wolf-hybrids, to Huskeys, to Malamutes, to downright mutts. Those dogs were just sooo happy to race even though it was -50 fahrenheit.

*sigh* but those days are gone now...

I think dogs were made to work, really.
We have a Collie-Labrador called Biscuit (mongrel), and I can't help feeling sorry for the dog, as it doesn't really have the proper environment for excercise. Excercise is generally something that dogs love, and as far as Huskies go, they're probably far more comfortable in the cold than the men, and I have no doubt that they thoroughly enjoy the sport.
I'll have to visit Alaska sometime.

Anyone heard of a Canadian Race - kinda like a "wacky" race?

They apparently race over the ice of the lakes in really old bangers (old old cars for those who dunno what a banger is!), and the winner is the first accross the other side, without going through the ice, or sliding off into oblivion. When i last heard about it was around 15 years ago, when i was in my lessons at School (as my teacher always talked about Canada, and hence my 'love' for the country). Just wondering if anyone else knew of it, the name, if it was still going etc etc etc.

Heard of it before, but you know more about it than I do.

My own dog is part husky (where else would he have got thick fur and the spiralled tail?). He's built like a brick ****house and there's nothing he likes to play more than tug-o-war. When we let him inside it doesn't take long before he gets uncomfortable and waits at the door to be let outside again to run around.
I don't see how he would be unhappy pulling a sled all day in weather where he doesn't overheat in the company of loads of other dogs.

Has anyone here heard of Adventure Racing? It's like an off-road verion of a triathlon and can take anywhere between a few hours and several days. They tend to involve mountain biking, XC running, kayaking and occasionally other sports such as climbing, open water swimming or horse riding. I'm itching to get involved in a one day event some time soon, I just need to get some more miles of running in.

Lack of a job at the mo means that both of those are out of my budget these days. Plus I can't stand ciggies personally, I gave 'em a try but they just made my throat feel furry. Also combining alcohol and exams isn't exactly the best formula for success. I guess I'm doomed to suffer good health and hopefully good grades .
