In our great country....

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

In our great country....

...of Northern Ireland, we have a race called the Northwest 200, the greatest racing event on the calendar of erm.. Coleraine(pop.20,000, plus me). And it was today.
It actually took me 50 minutes (as opposed to the usual 5) in a traffic jam to get from one side of the town to another, the traffic was so bad. It probably would've taken about 3 hours, but we decided to turn round and go back the way we came.
We also have the Milk Cup in the summer, which makes me really happy to live here.
While to most people, these events may seem small and overhyped, but that is simply because this entire country is small and overhyped.
Where I live, it's really boring, so we learn to appreciate these minor little events in our calendar more.

Anyways, I was wondering- what's the main events in you guys' calendars?
Note: beer festivals, your birthday and pie-eating contests don't count.

The only one of intrest to me, is about 1500 miles away in Alaska. The Iditarod.

The distance of the race is always over 1,000 miles

So....

sw, its hard on both people and dogs. The race can go from 17 to 32 days in the freezing cold. A good musher takes very good care of his dogs, there is no beating them. They know thier job and are very well trained. It is not often a dog dies. But people in the race have died too. Its just an indurance contest that being strong or fast yourself does not help. It requires judgment and observation to trail details. My dad has kept up with it since around 1980 and got me interested in it.

Raises a question. Alaskan sled dogs, or huskies, are "working" dogs. Like border collies, etc., they've been bred to perform tasks useful to humans. In the case of the huskies, its to want to run and pull a sled, basically.

Is it mean to let the dog do its thing even if that's what it was bred to do?

Aside from the race, Alaskans in some areas still use them to get around in the dead of winter. Wilderness areas with no fuel , it would be nessisay. There was a tv special not all that long ago, that told of a man about 50 miles from the nerest town, made the trip about once a month to get supplies and used dog sleds to get back and forth. As far as the race, the rules required manditory rest periods every 8 hrs and 24 hrs.
