Computer STILL not working! Part2 plz help

Ok, referring you guys back to this, i still cant get my comptuer working.

Taw ended up sending me 2 of his mobos along with a CPU and some RAM but things still arent working. He gave me a Gigabyte BX133-RAID.

The first time around I used Taw's mobo, i plugged in all the cables/hardware, thinkign that this will work but it didnt. The Power LED in the front of the computer was on and the fans of the CPU and PSU were on but no other activity were noticed (no computer beeps as well). So, i decided to go at the barebones tactic. I took everythign out and just had the following hardware connected: the mobo, psu, cpu, ram, hard drive, and video card. Same thing. Just the Power LED on and the 2 fans spinning but nothign else. No beeps at all.

Also, im wondering. When connecting the connectors for the Power LED/Reset switch/Power switch/etc, what direction do i connect them in? One side of the connector has the words labelled on them, the other side has the holes where you can see the metal bridges. I tried both ways.

I also bought another mobo on eBay. My old mobo was a Asus P2B-F, this one was a P2B, a slightly older one but still should work. Same exact thing with that mobo.

THe only diff is what i get with my original motherboard. You can see what happens in the link i gave above.

Im pretty sure i attached the heatsink on correctly on the cpu. I wiped the heatsink with some thermal paste before hand and then applied a dab to the cpu and then spread it around and attached the heatsink and locked it into place with those 2 metal arms on the heatsink. I bought a 10 dollar stock heatsink/fan combo for the cpu taw gave me.

What i find odd is the fact that i have the same problem with all my "new" mobos. ANd no beeps as well.

Oh yah, and for the IDE cables. The IDE cable that I use for my Hard drive doesnt have the little nub that sticks out like the other cables have. The nub should help me determine which way the cable is inserted into the IDE port. But i tried connecting it both was as well and same thing for both.

ok help me

i agree with sw, buy a new one off ebay
they shouldnt be that expensive for a
medium spec machine.

it just so happens that i know those mobos work, although i could accept that in the freight they might have discharged. But for every board you try? there's some other factor at work.

the first and most obvious is, you aren't putting the power switch connector onto the DiLs properly, while usually it doesn't matter which way round they are, for power it can be important (i once ripped out an entire mobo and spent 2 days fookin about before i realised wot id done!) so check that ABit amanual I sent you.

othewise it's your pc power supply, get a new ATX psu 400W, wont saet you back much.

OR you've got a short somewhere. check how you've screwed everything up. Also have you tried changing the CMOS batteries?

and watch those connectors, you dont need the nub, the keyline (the red stripe) on IDE cables is the one that goes nearest to the power connector - always. tbh EB i dont think theres owt insurmountable here. if you don't believe me ask Must or Esqy, it's got to be something you're not q getting right, 3 boards is too much , no-ones that unlucky.

Except the switch, can be checked to see of full power coming through, and the powersupply itself. Got to be one of the two now. Multimeter will check the outpu from the switch. If less than required voltage, somethings don't run, rungood. Also, I would then check voltage from the wire sets coming from the power supply. If you have replaed, eliminated everything else there is only 2 left. Do you have another swich from another box to swap to test theroy? (SP)

Ok guys? I want to FIX my computer. not buy another one. If i could buy another one, i would, trust me. Now plz go back to the topic and not suggest ebay every 2 posts. If i had more than $1.37 in the bank, i would buy a new computer, thank you very much.

Well the thing is that i connected it both ways and both dont work. I can use the power switch/power button on my case to turn it on but i cant use it to turn it off. "it" being the entire system. I have to use the power supply switch.

Well, from some research i did, if I dont hear any beeps, then the mobos are dead right?

I tried jsut about anything. I even tried removing the RAM from the mobo and i still hear no beeps. As i understand it, if the ram slots are empty the mobo should beep right?

And i connected the pc speaker to the pegs as well. Also tried both ways. Neither work...on ALL of the mobos.

I know, i think i may have done somethign wrong here but im not suer what. Ive followed everything to the word.

Ive also inspected the mobos and none of them have any burn marks or anything. Nor have i ever smelled any smoke.

Also, i have switched the CMOS batteries around and thigns still dont work so its not that. ANd i dont have a voltmeter lying around nor do i know where to get one.

Taw, do you mind goign on MSN or something? It would be very helpful if i could chat with you in real time....ill be online.

Erm, out of curiosity here, any relations, friends or parents even that are local with a computer? know much about them inside and feel confident? You could swap Mobos with them to see if they work, or use theirs. I think they will work, and that you might be wanting (like Taw said) to check power and other supply stuff. Maybe some of the connecting cables/wires are - erm- broke? I remember when buying mine i needed to get a new power supply unit, as the old one wasn't up to a P4 standard or something. Needless to say I bought a tower unit with it fixed in already - as it cost about the same.

Possible power unit not up to scratch/wrong type or something? As you guess - i dunno much, and no technical terms, but would be using someone elses PC to check that the components work - fastest way for the "un-knowledgeable" like me to find out what is causing probs.

lol i know. I wish i can do that but everyone i know now is busy. And the computer im on now is a compaq and it looks like its built like a tank.

im not sure if its the PSU or not. Before i got all these "new" parts, i went out and bought a new PSU from the mall but that didnt help at all.

Im just puzzled by why i dont even hear any beeping noises from the speaker. Im sure the wires are still intact.

Also, Taw, what's the Red light on the mobos you sent me? Theres a tiny LED on the mobo itself which lights up whenever i turn on the PSU...

EB, are you on a laptop now? If a desktop, could you take the power supply out and swap it. Might give a clue, and you could leave CD, ect unpluged to test.

Post Sat May 08, 2004 2:26 pm

As I said, im on a compaq. Its a desktop system, a very old one.

I opened this one up before a few weeks ago to take a look and there were metal bars everywhere blocking me. And it looks like everything is just so damn squished into the case that im scared to take anything deep inside it outside because im not sure if i can get it all back in. Not to mention i dont want to screw this computer up. My family has to use it and so i dont want to risk me breaking it.
