However, getting back to the memory effect, lithium ion batteries have zero problems with it. You don't have to do that charge, fully drain stuff to prepare it either. NiCads also have "little if no" memory effect. It depends on the chemistry employed.
Down side to Lithium Ion batteries.... expect to have to replace them after 2 years. Over time, the chemical composition breaks down and they build up too much internal resistance to discharge the power that may be stored in them. The failure in Lith batteries is sort of sudden. NiCads have less internal resistance to start but also will chemical degrade over time. Could not find a solid expected life but the degradation starts immediately.
NiMh batteries have memory effect problems.

And price. Lithium ion batteries generally cost more. Still, two years' useful life is pretty good amortization of the cost.
