Google getting rich, eh?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Google getting rich, eh?

I just happened across this article on the bbc website about Google selling a large amount of its stock on either Nasdaq or the NY stock exchange which could value the firm at above $20bn and I was just wondering how something as simple as a search engine could generate so much money...

the ammount of advertisements that are there and I will bet that companies can pay extra to have thier web sites come up first.

Yeah, I know you can reserve spots and have sponored links and stuff, but I don't really see how that can generate so much money...

i think that they also sell the search engine to companies, so that they can have an effecting engine on the comp's website.

Google could also make so much money based on hits thoughout the day.

Google make the majority of their money from selling "top ranking positions". Speaking as someone who has to try to improve rankings on a day to day basis, I can tell you that its pretty near damn impossible to get into the top ranking of a search unless you fork out some money to the search engine themselves. Now, I pay them about £1500-3000 a year to get my sites noticed...and I know at least 9 other people who do the same, so from 10 people alone they make £15,000-£30,000 a year. Now bear in mind that there are something close to 50,000 "professional" web designers in the uk alone. Are you beginning to understand how they're making their money yet? Thats a figure of £75million-£150million a year from UK web designers alone.

Then of course there are the unbelievable amount of sites that offer google searches through their own websites - Yahoo! being the biggest reseller. So taking all of that into account, and the fact that they are one of the oldest and probably THE most used search engine on the net, I'm just completely surprised that its not more money than that.

Good luck to them, I wouldn't be hesitating at all, would you?!

Actually, I don't give a darn - it's not my money, so why worry? And, it's a good searh engine after all.
@gromit: dead and back, or what? - what in the heck does that RIP stand for?!
I was recently limited concerning my access to the net, so my posts were (and still are) random and disorganised, so I may have missed sth. So, did you die and came back?

it seems as if they are getting paid by spyware people (or maybe they are paying them O.o) cause i have something that Adaware cant get rid of....and no matter what search engine i use the same thing pops up, and what do ya know? ITS GOOGLE

i prefer yahoo search but i cant use it cause of this retarded piece of sh*t

Post Thu Apr 29, 2004 8:53 pm

Ohhh I had that its a Google webcrawler if you know why Google is big its because these spyware things that record all websites then send them back to google for processing. Think of it as good because you are helping google make more money and help me find my searches better.

Post Thu Apr 29, 2004 9:12 pm

no its not a good thing cause every search i do no matter what search engine i use it ends up on a google search page...which rather pisses me off cause google is the worst search engine

They've been planning that for a while. I guess that it is a good move, financially speaking.

webferret. there is no other search engine worth using (imo )

Post Fri Apr 30, 2004 2:10 am

But it's a downloadable program, Taw. At least with Yahoo!, etc you don't have to install anything.

WebFerret is probably spyware anyway .
