Hey it''s my job... New Artificial Bones

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Hey it''s my job... New Artificial Bones

Did you here about the surgery that took place this week in Sydney? A 7 year old boy named Sam Nakkan got his femur (thigh bone) replaced with a "growing" artificial bone. It's in the Daily Telegraph, in the issue of the 28th or the 29th or maybe even the 30th if it is friday already. Anyway, I designed that artificial bone, and many like it. It's cool to see something you did in the paper, especially if its good.

Congrats Topher! I didn't read the article, and I have no idea what you're talking about, but its always nice to get some kind of recognition for the work you've done....and this sounds like some pretty serious research you've been doing, so congratulations, I hope that your work brings much benefit to people around the world.

It is basically an expandable implant for children who have bone cancer.

When a child is young, they are gonna grow quite a bit. Before, when a kid was diagnosed, the doc would replace the child’s bone with an implant that would let them walk again. But the child would have to go into surgery whenever he/she would grow 10-30mm to expand the implant by adding pieces to it, thereby making up the difference between one leg and another. The one in the articles doesn’t require additional surgeries, just a simple Doctor’s office visit and the child is on his or her way out with even length legs again!!! Can’t tell you how it works, it’s a secret.

Here are the first 3 articles I could find:

Indiana Case

Australia Case

Washington Case

man you deserve a medal for doing that sort of work....even if you never receive acknowledgement for it, you should feel pretty damn good about the lives you've helped.

I think we're gonna have to invent the TLR Medal of Honour

i heard about that on the news in my area
cool, your a lot smarter than me
i wasn't really paying much attenion to that story, dont like doctors
but they might have mentioned you name don't know
*claps* i bet that little invention will help a lot of ppl

They won't mention my name anywhere, since it was a team effort... but those three cases and about 65 more are my designs. I created them specifically for each of those children. And my high school guidance counselor said I couldn't apply myself to anything useful.

Wow. Really really great!

Being able to make a difference is, I think, what all of us secretly hope that we can do. Knowing that you've actually done just that must be a very rewarding experience.

*applause*

topher, I take it you're a mechanical engineer?
I should be studying Mech Eng at uni in september. You're doing exactly the sort of work I'd like to do: the cutting edge of design and actually making a real difference to people's lives. Any chance you use MSN messenger? I'd like to talk to you sometime.

you could e-mail me, I think that would be the best way to get in touch with me... I have 2 jobs until july then I get married in august so I am swamped with stuff to do, and by your profile you live in the UK so I am not sure if our schedules woudl work out to be able to chat. If they do somehow though, I would be more than happy to talk. I don't have a MSN account but I could easily get one.
