VoIP - Their Greatest Mistake Ever

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

VoIP - Their Greatest Mistake Ever

Who's? My company's. We're in a shiny new building, able to house around 10k people I think. We occupy around 2/5th of the entire building (which we ourself designed btw) and moved in November last year.
Hightech it was supposed to be, Voice over IP, network and telephone integrated into one little cable.
Right now both the phones are out of order and the network is well, occasionally working. Programs shut down randomly, files wont save, servers aren't accessable, Auto bloody CAD doesn't run smoothly if at all and crashes randomly without notice.
All because the phones are out of order.
I hate VoIP.
Just another rant, luckily the network works wel enough for me to go online and share my frustrations with you.
And we're having beer later today so at least we're ending alright

Our VoIP network is running like a bought one. It's something I keep on meaning to learn about but I just couldn't arsed. Pretty nifty though, I've got one local phone and another hanging off the Melbourne VoIP network. So I can call my Melbourne compadre's without raising a charge, which cuts the nuts out of my phone budget. Nice one!

Don't worry though Nick, every new building has its ironing out period. Granted the two building moves I've been involved with have gone off without a hitch (which is amazing considering I was involved), but there are plenty of things that can go wrong. Especially when you've got a new infrastructure going in, like VoIP. I'm sure they'll have all the bugs ironed out in a couple of days.

poor Nickless, your firm didn't get employ T awakalna W orldwide A dvanced T elecommunications PLC to do the wprk. Always gald to undertake "foreigners" every now and then (see that, "foreigners," get it? how good is that?)

For the sake of my coleagues I wouldn't want to bring you into here Taw, sorry but I don't think most of em would survive

Anyway, Ironing out period? Lemme sum up a few of the things going on here since we've moved in:

1) Our building is long, about 250 meters maybe longer and around 20 meters wide. A corridor runs down the middle over the length of course Anyway, the people sitting clos to the corridor can feal the floor shaking whenever someone walks passed them!!! The floor feals like a water bed if more then one person a a time walk across the same piece of floor.
2) One of the elevators crashed down with someone inside, luckily the brakes worked.
3) the cleaning service only cleans every other day, which means that everyother day we start with a filled litterbin. sometimes the weekends are in betwenn two cleanings so that's three days instead of one, and sometimes whe have a collective day off just before or after the weekend which means 4 days in between cleaning. Any organic material which hasn't ran away has started to smell by then.
4) The printer, a megamachine which can print, scan, copy in every way imaginable, breaks down on a regular basis.

Just some of the more anoying problems we had last 6 minths we're here.
Crappy building...

How some people can be so stupid to come up with such an idea, just to save a few bucks on the infrastructure still never seizes to amaze me.
Academics...

I designed nothing, I got no photo's, it's all to bad to be captivated on film and I'd never design such a piece of crap.

About the TWAT part, I was to frustrated to see anything, that also explains a few typo's.

I'm cool now tho, got a party coming up and already had a few beers, so I'm doin' fine now

VoIP is both cheap and useful. We use it at work (and have for quite a while), and we haven't had any problems. Still, it can be tricky to work with.

Post Thu Apr 29, 2004 11:52 pm

it can be difficult to set up for the unwary and inexperienced, but it really isn't too hard, I did a 130 user one by myself a few ,onths ago and it took longer to cable up the patch panel(s) than anything else.

Well it's the way of future (or so they say), and it's especially good for cheap international calls and the like.

Post Fri Apr 30, 2004 6:13 am

meh, our VoIP sucks mayor balls.
I don't see any advantage except the money aspect which is stupid because it's proven to be very unstable. Well, at our ofice it's unstable anyway.
But we're stuck with it now and we've gotta deal with it. Like the chief says: "It's not a problem, it's a challenge." (yuch)
