Need advice by next Tuesday (motherboard)

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Remember that the MB is the most important part of your PC; it is the foundation for any system, and good quality is a must. As Taw and Chips have said, ASUS are good, as are Abit. Abit are especially good for "enthusiasts" because they allow for more BIOS tweaking; eg . overclocking. I may get one myself next time I upgrade. You could also go for an MSI MB, which are supposed to be quite fast and of decent quality. If you are intertested in going for an AM64, then I'd strongly recommend waiting for PCI Express MBs.

I might go Abit precisely for that reason, Eskie. I was looking at the IC7, I really like it, but the top-end Gigabytes have more multimedia features (doesn't bother me much but Mrs Taw insists on my pc being family access, even though they all have their own pcs

you won't catch me going AMD. sorry, still not sold. it's not THAT good. Intel still no1 for genuine power and reliability.

I'll get the IC7. decided.

YES!!!!!!!! Thanks a ton for the advice guys but I have wonderful news, My motherboard has now turned out to be OK! What evidently happened was my DVD-ROM drive kicked the bucket and the CD-ROM drive I tried to replace it with was either also bad or incompatible! Yipee! I had another CD-ROM in the basement (48X) so now I can resume operations. In addition, I will hopefully get a new DVD-CD/RW as a replacement. Therefore, I Do Not Have To Shell Out $300 For A New Mobo, just $70 for a drive. I thought I was toast for a while.

Taw - That's a nice board, let me know how it goes. Regarding Gigabyte, over the last couple of years, they seem to be adding more features, but cutting back in other areas. Eg. The Gigabyte Radeon 9700's didn't come with RAM heatsinks, and the board these days have much less in the way of software and cables than they used to.

Space - That's good news. The longer you take in upgrading, the better is will be in the long run.
