I for one am against guns being owned by people like it happens in the us.

didn't we do this the other day in some other thread about videogame violence?

to be honest imho many films have made violence seem cool
in the past war/westerns/historical films were to far away from real life of the viewer, as with scifi again unreal
but some of the "modern" films take place in a location/timeframe that people relate to more readily ,which can have a dangerous influence on some weak minded individuals

Violence for violence's sake is a horrible thing. That's why I watch movies and play video games. That's where violence belongs. @Nickless: There's nothing wrong with owning a gun, it depends on how you USE it. Humans on a whole, are naturally savage and violent creatures. We have always been that way, and we will always BE that way. There's no getting around it. I accept that it's a part of our nature. But that's how I see it.

It depends on how the gun is used .

Very complicated issue, to say the least. Meezookeewee is IMO correct; mankind is a violent creature. Direct observation of children will prove this to anyone who watches long enough. Children have to be taught manners. They have to learn respect for others. Moral direction and values have to be instilled in them. So the question becomes; where do kids learn these things? Do their parents teach them? Or are their parents either absent, too self absorbed or so messed up themselves that they're incapable of teaching their kids? Where do children, whose parents are for whatever reason incapable of teaching them to be socially decent, learn these things? Most of them spend uncounted hours in front of a television or pounding the shoot button on their favorite playstation FPS. I took my kids to a science museum for children last Saturday. On the walls of the museum were informative posters with various interesting facts and figures. One of the posters that captured my attention was one that quoted a study of the average amount of television a toddler in the U.S. watches. The poster said that by the age of five the average American child has spent more time watching a television than a college student spends in class during a four year program. I'd say that so much exposure to media has to play a role in the developement of a child's values and what that child sees as being socially acceptable.
So I wouldn't say it's nescessarily violent media's fault. More that due to a lack of responsible parenting children are over-exposed to violent media. Therefore it's the parents fault.
This is where we get into the part about guns. Guns in and of themselves are not that dangerous. I realize that this may sound crazy to those that are not used to prolonged exposure to guns but it's true. When you're dealing with any weapon education is the most important factor in judging how dangerous that weapon is. Take karate or boxing. Certainly weapons with lethal potential, however you won't find many people, of any nation, who would ban these weapons from being disseminated in their general population. Why? Because along with these weapons comes years of education on their responsible use. Will criminals use these weapons for nefarious purposes? Yes, just as they'll use knives or clubs or guns. The problem with guns is that parents don't take the time to educate their children properly before those children find access to guns. A gun is a perfectly safe, responsible weapon in the hands of a person who is educated and has no criminal intent.
So to summarize: Not media's fault(although it does contribute) Parents' fault. Guns, good. Uneducated kids with guns, bad.
(Damn all that typing for that?!)

Edit = Just thought I should make it clear I'm not advocating gun ownership or gun control. Just answering the original topic.
