The placenta should develop itself and hook in on the bowel section, providing the little one with the much needed feeding.

Couldn't have said it better myself Loc. To me, its a complete waste of intelligence and money - which could otherwise be doing something useful like finding a cure for cancer or diabetes. I find it infuriating.

@everyone, What I am about to say might shock you somewhat, especially after young worth Passing away.

There is a good chance of there being no Cure to Cancer at all, yes I am sorry to say this, but this is what I think:
Cancer originates from deep within us, basicly the core structure of the Cell, The Genome that causes Cancer ( The "Carcinogen" ) is part of us as much as a Braincell, it has a function, namely Restoring the Lost cells by letting it split up. But it has a Dual function, if a single cell is damaged in someway, The carcinogen will do its normal Job, But there are no cells to replace, so it will reproduce itself untamed, it being very confused about it (Let's say, a Gromitous state ) That is the True nature of where Cancer Resides in the human body, make no mistake, this Core process resides in every cell, be it a Mitosis or Meiosis originated cell, it exists, and cannot be removed, no matter what, to remove it is basicly Destroying The human Body, if it were to be removed, we cannot risk getting wounded, because damaged cell tissue wouldn't be replaced afterwards.
So no matter what, unfortunately its a Lose-lose situation. The CarcinoGen is basicly a Selfdestruct clause Built into our Bodies, and its Hotwired extremely.

If we were to be able in the Future to circumvent that Hotwiring in the Future, then I don't think it would matter that much, because it will Destroy the Blance of Nature, and one thing Mother Nature ALWAYS keeps track of, is her Balance. So in time (read as: Directly afterwards) she will incorporate a new Cellular SelfDestruction Process, one that is even more hotwired...

Exactly the sort of diseases to which you are genetically predisposed .
Alright, so sometimes cancer is dumb luck as well but there is a genetic side too.

Admittedly knowledge could be put to better use in those areas in some respects, but don't forget that mucking around with genes and stuff may eventually do wonders for eliminating a lot of nasty illnesses. All this 'messing with mother nature' nonsense. We are as we are through a series of flukes and things in the right place at the right time. There is no reason why something may not be born with all the 'desirable' traits. The whole thing is random. Let's not also forget that treating illness is also interfering with 'mother nature' too, as only the ones capable of surviving disease should live.

As for the main subject... good, great. I couldn't care less in some respects, apart from the prospect of stem cell production. That would represent a huge leap in medicine and likely save countless lives. I can hardly see anything disturbing about that.

From what I was told, all cells are programmed and designed to die. *Waits for pathos to dissipate* In fact, if they are constantly told not to die they will die. Any cells which don't die when 'told' to (or rather not told not to die) become cancerous and multiply out of control.

Okay, that comprises my 2.49 recurring cents (Maths buffs should understand that)

If you consider that much of what we have discovered or invented over time often has been motivated by human vanity or greed, the pursuit of a cure for
cancer or any other disease which has a genetic predisposition component is not so hard to fathom. Just as Locutus has pointed out that throughout history, mankind has been fairly bloody minded in deed and entertainment, so too has mankind been very much hubristic and vain animal more interested in responding greedily to his desires as if they were his truly basic needs.

Both the argument for and against being able to find such cures is based on what we know today. I don't think we can say now what is the absolutely correct answer because we really don't have all the facts we need to know.

BUT messing around with the human genome give mee the creeps and I also get a sense of moral disgust at the idea. I just don't know that we as a species have the self discipline to not mess about with it. Something tells me that we don't.
