The ID Sniper Rifle

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

The ID Sniper Rifle

I love new technology, but this is pretty useless; the ID Sniper Rifle! It's like tagging wildlife... from a long way away! Thoughts?

They can monitor people without having to actually alert them to it by taking them in for questioning. It would be better if it could analyze dna and send off a sample for recording etc as well. However, i think the human rights brigade would have a field day. They hate the "big brother" world - but i love it. They went spare over the idea of CCTV on streets around the country, but they are incredibly invaluable for targeting crime in city centers, and bringing offenders to justice. Heck - I wouldn't care if we were data tagged as to be able to record your movements etc. Then - when a crime occurs, type where and when, and it pulls up ID of whom was in area/at the location at the time. Would stop crime pretty darned fast methinks!

However, things like this will never happen do to public rights, and my views are pretty extremist to put it mildly!. Like Speed Cameras in this country, its a hot topic about if they are right or wrong, i say the only people who can possibly have cause to complain are the ones breaking the law and speeding....why they feel its unfair they get fined for breaking the law i don't know, but they should just obey the law instead! I know the arguement is about they should target REAL crims, but they have to keep tabs on everything, and a static speed cam like those reduces RTA's (unless you have people speeding - who break sharply - which does happen), and frees up cops to do other stuff. You cannot have it so that police no longer go after speeding motorists, as then we would have "unlimited" road speeds - and RTA's would quadrouple!

So i am all for developments to help catch/track crims and record the whereabouts of crims. And if anyone wonders, I would have no probs with them "tagging" myself, as long as it was discreet (no big sign round my neck please!)

I'm afraid it will only be a matter of time before we all have to have microchip IDs implanted in us at birth; for all the reasons you stated, Chips

For the record, my own opinion of these sorts of technologies is that they are evil and intrusive, and once available to the authorities tend not to be passed over. The argument for their widespread use is always that it cuts crime, makes the public safer, and if you're not doing anything wrong, what have you got to worry about? however i don't like the thought of some copper sat in a control room monitoring where I am 24/7 when I haven't done anything wrong (yet) or being able to tell every conversation that goes on in my house or what I'm up to with my Mrs.

I just wonder how long it will be before this new technology will be abused ?
One speed ticket, and I'm tagged for the rest of my life ?
No thanks.

I don't know about the ID chips Taw, but I'm worried about the barcode tattoos. It'll happen .

Post Tue Apr 13, 2004 2:16 am

you have to have a "code" now to get into a "bar?" what's the world coming too!

It'll get used on the battlefield, I have no doubt about that. It'll never make it into civillian usage though, not only would it break privacy laws in almost every country in the world, no-one in thier right mind would allow themselves to be tagged like cattle. Privacy is one of our most basic human rights and I don't know about you guys, but I'll go down swinging before I give it up.

If it really only was to record movements (as in where you were), then it shouldn't invade. I wouldn't like the idea of it being a "microphone", or having poeple watching me on cam in my own home, but a kinda "locater" beacon would be okay. However, if the police can use it, so can crims, and which point they could literally "scan" your tag and know your details etc - which wouldn't work. So i am not against it being used in the method i mentioned (ie, they don't know where you are at all, its only when they need to know who was near a certain point that they will call up some records) - but the chances of that are slim

Perhaps so Chips, but even if it is used legitimately to start with, people will start to abuse it; probably with their government's blessing. Just think, if the Yanks had tagged Hussein (or Osama) when they had the chance, they would be resting much more comfortably right now .

This is along the same lines as the money issue. But worse. You want your boss to be able to track you when you call in sick but go fishing?

I can see it used in riots to track down ring leaders. If the crowd is too violent that it's not safe to approach it to remove the person or in doing so casualties may be caused to innocents, shooting a guy with an ID tag sounds like a very useful option. I can see it being used perhaps in Iraq. You can tag a militant and then hopefully he may lead you to a weapons cache later on. Also what if it were used on an high up Al-Quaeda member? Rather than arresting him immediately, have him covertly tagged and then use spy planes to trace him using the GPS, then hopefully they'll know all his actions and will probably be able to foil any terrorist acts he gets involved in. Plus, if or when the day comes that this guy gets near Mr. bin Laden, the spy planes could drop a missile on his head and they'd never see it coming.

Rec - Yes, it could have many useful applications . Still, the product is open to abuse, as with most things, but I suggest that we check the rooftops of surrounding buildings everytime we get a mosquito bite .
