Why do machines get given female names?

Usually, a mechanic can't really develop a love/hate relationship with a male machine.... and then there was.....H.A.L. *shudder*

no he was not. he was given conflicting instructions to keep the mission objective secret (by the NSA) which conflicted with his core program to divulge all relevant information concerning the mission to the crew. This made him unable to function correctly and he became in human terms psychotic. So ner.

Yes i relise this would never work, but it gives you the idea, just imagine those two subs running at the same time
