Technical Question About Caching DLLs

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Technical Question About Caching DLLs

My PC magazine wanderings led me to a longtime favorite the other day, CPU (magazine).

They had a little Registry tweak good for all versions of windows so that your system would force unload unusued but cached DLLs.

Question: Aren't some DLLs that are cached used commonly by other programs? If you force your cache to unload all DLLs used by, FL, let's say (just as hypothetical example), and this also unloads DLLs cached by other running programs, will those DLLs be re-cached by the other in-use application?

Yes. If you have programs that are accessing the same DLL files that have just been unloaded, they will be re-cached when the program runs. This does of course mean that they will be cleared from the cache after the latter program ends. You CAN save RAM this way, but I don't really think that it is worth it, unless you need every least MB, and/or have only a small amount of RAM.

Thanks.

It's not so much the RAM as the GDI, User resources. Is there a tweak for that?

What exactly do you want to tweak, old chum? You can use "TweakXP", or "TweakUI", or any number of general tweaking tools to do many different things. Give me specifics, man!

didn't i tell you about this, Ed? Tweak Xp as Rabbithead/Horsebody says, optimizes your available RAM by, amongst other things, chucking the unused dlls out of memory. But, you can't use it cos your on ME. Tweak UI tweaks the interface. For your o/s, flaky as it is (ok I know it works for you) I'd suggest the patented Tawakalna 95/98/Me tweaks, that's what i use on my stuff.

And, er, how does one get one's hands on said patent?

you can get it here, you know it makes sense...

*Downloads and reads document* Ah, "msdos.sys" that takes me back!

as long as you remember to change its properties from read only BEFORE you edit it, then change them back when you're ready to save it.

watch the vcache section. remember to compensate for onboard memory like shared vram.
