Spam: The Phenomenon

There is a very interesting (an lengthy) report about spam now available. For some reason, the guy's bandwidth is being restored soon, but the link I have provided is directed to Google's cache, so you can still read it (without the pictures unfortunately). The report brings up some very salient points, and some of the results and conclusions are quite surprising. One of the questions that it raises though, is a pertinent one; Why are we adapting to spam instead of banning it? To me personally, it seems that we are dealing with the symptoms of the problem and not the cause. The worst part is that peple are capitalising upon spam by creating new filters or "anti-SPAM" technologies. Making money off this enormous problem seems wrong, in my opinion.

I'm sorry about creating "another" thread about spam, but this one is different. Let's all show how mature we can be, and not get this thread locked. Alright? Good .

Note: This is my 2000th post! I would like to thank TLR, and the little people I've stepped on while on my way up the ladder fof success!

I have never bought Anything advertised in Spam. No will I. Your right though. Like the medical field, they create cures for some disease, only to have to later cure the side effects of the other cure. But, until they do fix the Spam problem, let them fine the spammer and destroy the computer equipment. That at least will slow them down, then go after the ones who Pay them to spam. That is where is should hurt the wallet.

Spam is the work of Satan. It is evil. I don't look at it. I pretty empty my e-mail bulk folder every chance I get. Every damn time I try to look at my e-mail, my bulk folder has at least 50 or 60 pieces of crap mail that most likely contain viruses or Trojan Horses. The rest of it is useless s**t.

I've always wondered why people even create viruses to send to peoples other computers and mess them up. Maybe it's because they enjoy making people mad(sorry if i got off topic)

Post Wed Apr 07, 2004 7:49 pm

I actually read somwhere that the virus-makers use the viruses to send messages to thier virus-making rivals, and thus, they have to subtly edit the code, and thus, creating a new virus that the anti-vir programs wont pick up, and thus, forcing the anti-vir companies to capture the virus and provide the source code to kill it.

I cam up with an idea a while back to use Hackers and viral programmers that had been arrested to attack illegal websites and spammers. Give them two choices: help us and you go free, refuse, and we imprison you. Give a bit of an edge to us wouldnt it?

I think they already do that. A kid at some school hacked into his grades but he was caught. Now he constantly hacks into the school system to look for holes and then tells the principal or whatever.

Thanks AoD, I appreciate it . I think you've been watching "Spiderman" too much!

Apparently, a number of virus/worm/trojan writers don't use the code to infect people, but just like to prcatice their skills. They then post the code on the internet, and other people use them. I can't believe that people like don't get locked up! It's like placing a loaded gun on your front lawn; anyone can pick it up and fire it!

A law banning spammers would simply make what is happening illegal. I don't think it would put a stop to it. Already, the worst offenders take great pains not to be easily traced back.

The instrumentalities needed to stop spammers both legally and technologically are available. But to make them work properly, the concern is that others, non-spammers, would lose some of their civil rights in the process. I.e., there would be and organized and rationalized big brother tracking of private activity on the internet. Personal and/or confidential information of individuals would be captured and stored by governments or quasi-governmental agencies who may not have the private individuals best interests at heart.

The question is more a matter of how to do it to prevent a loss of civil liberties and an invasion of privacy on the internet.

To that end, I think the proposed solution is rather workable.

I found the reading fascinating.
