Tech help needed: USB, DLLs, and an invisible virus.

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Tech help needed: USB, DLLs, and an invisible virus.

Ok, all you tech wizards out there...
I have three fairly minor problems with my computer, but my family is making it into one big major problem ad im going half deaf from thier yelling so any help would be appreciated.

Ok, problem number one:
My printer(Canon S520) and scanner (Canon N676U) are both hooked up, via USB, to 2 USB ports in the back of the box, now, the problem is, after a certain period of time has passed that the printer and scanner have been inactive, the computer thinks they are no longer connected to the system, and will not recognise them until we restart the comp.

Problem 2:
My Anti-Vir program(Pc-cillin 2003) for some reason, pops-up at startup with a message saying it has detected a virus(check Jpg for details). I have run an anti-vir scan 3 times and combed the registry for the virus and found nothing.

Problem 3:
Windows is popping up a message at startup saying that it cant find a module in the 'bridge.dll' system32 file

Problems 2 and three are seen here:

Found this on another forum dealing with it.

Start Menu>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CurrentVersion>Run -- Delete key with bridge.dll

Start Menu>run>msconfig>startup Uncheck bridge.dll

Restart Computer; Run Adaware before doing anything else.

Bridge Hope this helps with that part.

Edit- Also heard that its best to run your anti-virus in safe mode. Less things running in background, and viruses can be found easyer.

Edit2 Ran a search on my computer, XP, this is no such file. Nor is it in my reg. May be virus related.

well, the DLL, look for in in the system 32 folder, if it isnt there, then you can probably download it form the internet, check google

EDIT find bridge.dll, and delete it, then go into, Start\run\(type)
msconfig\startup(the tab)\locate the "bridge.dll" entry, and disable it

with the invisible virus, try Either re-installing anti virus software OR
updating virus software OR use different virus software OR
the "virus" is a visual basic file that runs on startup, find and delete it
by searching for ".VBS" (caps and no caps)

with the printers, if you havent tried this already re-install the drivers
OR unplug them then re plug them (messy)

If these dont work, then wait for Taw or Esq'y

1) You've had this problem before, haven't you? I have nothing extra to add... excpet for get the latest drivers, try replacing the cables, check USB port and USB Root Hub settings, that sort of thing.

2) Check the registry again, and see if anything is in the "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run\", "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce" "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run\Rundll" folders (if you haven't already; you said you had but I wanted to be sure). Also search for any .VBS files.

3) That particular file is has been associated with spyware. Try scanning with AAW or SpyBot. You may also have to remove it from the registry; look for bridge.dll and bridge.inf.

Damn, they beat me to it! Grrrr! .

It is long and messy but here's a link for your virus problem

You have to read the whole thing to fix the problem

ok, tried looking in c:/, msconfig, and regedit for bridg.dll, nothing.
I even tried running windows under 'safe mode' but the virus engine wont start up.

Searched for .VBS files and found nothing apart from three files in the windows folder, no freelink refrences.

For the printer, ive tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling the printer completely, unplugging and replugging the cables, the only thing i havent tried is hitting it with a sledgehammer...

Maybe i should just format the bloody thing...

and what is the program 'hijackthis'??

Arania,

The link I noted above is a pretty thorough run-thru on that vbs problem. I misspoke in calling it a virus. The link calls it malware or a bot. Anyway, there is some scouring you'll have to do. Don't know which takes more time, full reinstall or scouring.

Assuming that you're a responsible user (I'm not consistent) you're backed up so that a full reinstall is painless. You might just take the occasion to do a complete maintenance, re-format, etc.
